Serious crappie food….

I know I have mentioned here before that I’ve had late fall and winter crappies in a bucket only to find a mess of small sunfish having been puked out. And I know I’ve mentioned small vibe baits for crappies being a really good very early open water season or very late open water season bait when vertically jigged, much like one would do thru the ice. And I know I have likely worn out my welcome with my airbrushing pictures. But honestly, I’m proud of these little suckers.

For the most part my airbrushing was done to get specific color patterns and not so much detail. More recently I have taken an interest in the detail stuff, and ya’ll have seen the Sunfish, Pumpkinseeds, Crappies and Perch I’ve done on larger baits. I’ve always been drawn back to those dink sunfish in the buckets though and finally sat down while the rain fell this afternoon and tried my hand at small detail painting and these little schnits are the end result. Like I said, I’m pretty mazed at these guys. By expanding the picture, you can see all the layers of color that go into creating these dudes.

After tinkering with an air brush painting baits and some taxidermy
I feel the most important step is knowing what a baby sunfish, crappie, perch, etc looks like right out of the water.

Paint me or give me a sharpie and let me flop around for a bit and I’ll replicate that. For science and not for free.

Superb works of art Jimmy! A color and color pattern I would most definitely have faith casting. How do the lipless cranks work for you in that size?

Great. Not this particular color, but on Tuesday of this week one helped put a meal of crappies together.
