Selling a collection

Does anyone have any experience in selling things they’ve collected over the years? Sports cards / Stamps?

I have a large box of football cards which I believe are complete sets from 1978 through 1982. I also have a bunch of postage stamps that I started when I was in elementary school and the postman visited our class and taught us about collecting them. I believe most are from 1980 – 1982. I actually paid attention (rarely) on this and most are unused, corner of the sheet with serial number, and protected. My football cards are not in great shape cause I looked at them all the time as a kid and bound them together by team with rubber bands.

Anyway, that was a long time ago (obviously) and I think I’ve moved them from house to house to house probably 12 times.

I know it wouldn’t be a big payday for me, maybe enough for some new gear, but I don’t know where to start to sell these.

    Anyone done it?

Call a card shop. Lots of money in sports card right now but they need to be specific cards. My buddy has been buying and selling a lot and making thousands doing it. He is also buying them for thousands some times.

I have a huge Wayne Gretzky collection. 100s of cards, action figures, plates, books, Beckets and more. I tried to sell it online and couldn’t even get someone to pay $300. So I keep moving the totes from place to place like you.

How much do you want for the empty totes DT?

Card shops will be the easy way to get some $ for them. You won’t get top $ but you also won’t have a bunch of time invested in selling them.

Yeah, I don’t want to put a bunch of time into research. And in this case “I don’t know what I got” would apply. Could be easily taken advantage of and not know, but at this rate, my kids will just toss them when I’m gone. doah

    In the same boat.
Tons of sports cards and a really nice stamp collection that I got NO INTEREST in online.
    Interested in more stamps Greg?

I found a guy locally that is he and his wife sell on EBAY enough she can stay home with the kids. He is selling a bunch of stuff for me at 30%. For that I’m not interested in fooling with it. Unfortunately, anything sold to be collectable will rarely become valuable. In that people don’t put them in their bike spokes etc. like they did the old ones. Also, fun money has dried up. Just had lunch with a buddy that works in a gun shop. He says they have been bombarded with people that spent their savings on guns and $60 a box 9mm ammo. Now that food and many costs of living have doubled, they need money to pay their bills. Good luck still some folks out there with money. But most want something really special and expect a deal.

Hey I posted pictures of me catching fish recently just to show I actually do fish grin

To the OP yes my dad buys and sells collectibles. He specializes in coins but he deals in all manner of antiques and collectibles. He also does appraisals. I could be wrong but I dont think card values have held up too well. Stamps have a market still I believe. If you’d like his number just send me a PM.

Greg if you find a good way, let us know. I also am sitting on a box of mostly football cards and have a small box of good rookie cards like Rice and Young cards.
