Seeking a Volunteer Opportunity

My company gives us 8 hours of PTO per year to use to volunteer for a charity. So here I sit, 10 months into my first year and I still have 8 hours to use, or lose.

I’m looking to the IDO community for ideas and please keep in mind, that to truly use these hours, the volunteer time needs to occur M – F, during a workday. Evenings, weekends, and Holidays there are a plethora of opportunities to volunteer, and I do.

Habitat for Humanity comes to mind, but my company is in Dallas, so I don’t have a group to work with. I’m looking for specific volunteer opportunities in the Twin Cities area between now and 12/31 on a workday.

Anyone have an organization that could use me for a day??

    TIA

Feed My Starving Children? My wife occasionally volunteers with them during the work day.

Eric, I would take what you are very passionate about, then seek out the opportunity. Everyone wins in that situation.

Salvation Army Red Kettle volunteer. Done this a few times. My employer also lets us take paid time to do stuff life this. Google “salvation army volunteer” for details.

Edit – Not as easy as it looks!!!!

In my previous job, I used my volunteer time to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels. They are a great organization but you would need to spread your 8 hours over multiple days. My route only took about 2 hrs to deliver. We had a team of 5 and delivered every Wed for lunch. We rotated so we delivered every 5 weeks. I would guess they also have needs for subs.

there is a group called capable partners which assists hunters with disabilities to duck and deer hunt. They have duck blinds in the river bottoms near Eden Prairie I believe near flying cloud airport. They also have deer blinds handicap accessible. This would be very rewarding and challenging.

If you wanna take a kid who has no one in his life to take him fishing, or take a vet fishing, or a family member of a currently deployed serviceman, or possibly a handicapped person. Get ahold of Fishing for Life.

Most shifts are 1 1/2 – 2 hours, but if you talk to them, they may work it out.

    I like Volunteering there.

Heck, Maybe we could do a IDO GTO at FMSC?

Thanks for the great ideas! I have many options to consider here. If you have more keep them coming.

    Thanks again,

    Eric
