Anyone modify or have a secret to rolling up the line on Beaver Dam tip ups after a long run (say a Northern0? It never seems like you can get the line to reel in tight on the spool. Turns out like a birds nest. Was wondering if there is a better trick that I’m missing.

Im assuming you have a reel winder for it? That helps. The ice on the line makes it thicker and spool messier. I usually rewind in the house after they thaw.
When on the lake I run the line under my boot to put tension on it and scrape off some excess ice and snow buildup as I reel in.

Have someone hold some tension on it, let the ice keep tension or your mouth.

    Suzuki,

    No reel winder here.

    Bigwerm,

I was hoping not to add a 2nd person. Also, (mouth) with my luck I’d take a hook in the upper lip.

Lol use your boot it’s much easier.
Mine are old school Beaver dams. No wind up bar. I use run the line under my boot and use My finger tip to wind.

Lol that too, but tasting the lake water really helps me dial in where the slimers are, and no I won’t share my secrets beyond that as your mileage may vary…. whistling rotflol rotflol rotflol

I almost always end up Running the line out and then back on after I get home and the spool and line have some time to dry out. Usually at the end of a day fishing its just get them wound up the best you can, and get off the lake. Then mess with later at home.

I know you said you don’t want to rely on a second person but if you have a buddy, or if your watching your buddy pulling in a fish, start putting the line back on the tipup asap before the line freezes. I also don’t fill the spool completely with line. Even 2/3 full should be plenty of line and leaves extra space for spooling the frozen line.

I cut a slot at the one o’clock position on the loop for the line. I can take the line out to wind the line up. Works great.

I usually just hook the bottom of the ice hole, walk away until you can get tension on the line and start winding & walking.

I used to have this issue too… then I read somewhere (probably IDO) that you don’t need a mile of line on a tip up. Really 10 more feet than the deepest you will fish a tip up… I shortened all mine to 40′ of braided and then 10 feet of mono. Much easier to handle when its spooled.
