After reading on thehulltruth long enough to want to gouge my eyes out from the back and forth and opinions and blah blah blah who can tell me, without starting something :), if I can satisfactorily seal my screws holding my transducer cord on my transom with 3M 4000uv sealant and not have transom water issues??

I’ve read of overdrilled epoxy filled holes, 5,200, marinetex, west system, etc.

4000uv is readily available to me and seems to do a good job from some people’s experiences.

    Thanks!

West System seems like overkill for sealing transducer holes. Honestly, any of those should work just fine. I have seen more people seal transducer holes with standard silicon sealant than anything else…Some people(specially on that forum) get too caught up in the minute details and argue over something that shouldn’t even warrant a second thought…

I’m sure someone over at SBC will chime in and tell you what they use, that’s who I would trust.

I used whatever silicone was laying around and never had a problem. Maybe re-applied after 5-8 year. Honestly I dont remember and its still fine.

I think the big difference is that many of the participants on that forum have their boats in the water for prolonged periods of time. The longest mine sits in the water is a 4 day fishing trip in Canada. Otherwise its daily trips and it is garaged all of the rest of the time.
More important than sealing the transducer cable mounting holes I think would be the top cap on the transom. I heard from a few guys that some manufacturers don’t even put ANY sealant in there.

Thank you for all the advice! I already feel better and like I’m not taking crazy pills anymore. I was starting to feel like I needed some advanced alien technology to fill these holes or something. I mean, I don’t want a wet transom but overdrilled, double epoxied holes?? I can get it for boats that sit in a harbor all year.

I’m gun shy to start with because I just replaced a transom on my old boat (Crestliner of course) this spring so don’t wanna go down that road again if I can help it.

    4000uv it is! Thanks again!

Who carries 4000uv? I’m about to put my transom back together and the motor back on.

To be honest not sure. I saw lowes had 5200, from what I read that might have good applications for rebuilding a transom. But I could ship to store at the Ace hardware just down the road from me so that’s where I went. A lot of stores will ship to store I found but not necessarily all of them stock it.
