When does winter trout fishing start? What are some tactics..does spinners and rapalas work in winter

I could be wrong but I think it’s Jan 1st? Spinners and Rapalas both work; when the water is colder I think a rapala is better. #7 countdown in natural pattern as you have more control and can fish it as slow as you want.

It’s actually open right now in some specific areas. Whitewater state park, Forrestville state park, in Chatfield, in Lanesboro, in Preston all have a catch-and-release season that’s open. After January 1st a bunch of other areas open up for catch-and-release as well. Check the regulations under the “special regulations, streams” section.

I was out yesterday. I was swinging wet flies and caught some nice fish. I talked to another guy who was throwing small silver spoons and spinners, he had good success too. I found most of my fish in faster, shallower runs and not in the deepest pools.
