We made our drive back out to South Dakota to visit family for the opener some of our group comes down from as far as Alaska each year. There was a lot of corn up but we still found some birds and got a great workout for the dogs. The year will only keep getting better as the corn goes out but it was a great time visiting with family and friends. I hope everyone that got out was able to experience the nice weather! (not so much the gusting winds though)

I’m not certain of your dog breed but my Pudelpointer looks almost exactly like your dark brown dog.

It does, and it is a Pudelpointer.
October 25, 2016 at 2:13 pm #1647002Guess I need to pay more attention. Not used to it being so busy in the bird forum, which is fantastic!
October 26, 2016 at 8:42 am #1647159I think we may have talked about them a few years ago. My memory is not the best though.

I think you are right. We should again after having owned one a few years.

Mine just turned 2 and is one of the best dogs I’ve ever had!October 27, 2016 at 9:51 am #1647436Small world! I commented on your black and white photo on facebook beautiful photo. Where did you get yours?
eric borkoskiPosts: 36October 27, 2016 at 12:25 pm #1647482We hunted Hettinger ND.
Saw quite a few birds but a lot of crops still in so they knew exactly where to go.
Dog worked great! Solid solid points and had some awesome retrieves.
Talked with the breeder the other night, thinking about getting #2 in the next year or two.October 27, 2016 at 12:39 pm #1647489I have a feeling mine is going to fade pretty quick Sat.(Iowa Opener) I have not been conditioning her like I should. Just cant find the time other than daily walks and some retrieving. My Pud has not been the dog of my dreams unfortunately so I will never get another one even though I know her problems are likely more individual behavior related than breed.
October 27, 2016 at 2:14 pm #1647512We were out in Mobridge area where my dad grew up. I honestly feel the birds were down this year but there was also still a lot of crops. We have been out as much as we can. Grouse, Pheasant and Duck. I will unfortunately miss out on my annual ND trip to Lakota due to scheduling conflicts but am pushing to get out to Nebraska or on another upland hunt somewhere.
eric borkoskiPosts: 36October 27, 2016 at 4:11 pm #1647530For some reason the whole Kansas thing interests me this year.
I am hearing a lot of good things.October 28, 2016 at 7:51 am #1647600I have some friends from college that used to go down there and have a good time every year. I am not sure where though. I would really like to do a Chukar or quail hunt somewhere.
October 28, 2016 at 10:55 am #1647659Suzuki you leave my birds alone! Still a lot of standing corn in the area. I really think that the best numbers in Iowa might be the Spirit Lake area and the Akron area. More public land around Spirit Lake. I need to get a new bird dog, my yellow lab has become a momma’s boy. He’s also getting old, but 1/2 of a morning of hunting is what I might try. Have a standing invite to head out to Hettinger ND and by the looks of the pictures the crew did really well.
eric borkoskiPosts: 36October 29, 2016 at 10:01 am #1647790Yes sir!
Had a blast, saw quite a few birds, a fair amount of corn still in when I was there so they had plenty of places to hide but just driving to the fields in the morning and seeing as many birds as we did was enough to get you pretty fired up for the day.
Brought home plenty of birds for us and was able to give a few to some friends who aren’t able to hunt anymore.October 31, 2016 at 7:40 am #1647987Yes sir!

That’s always a good feeling.
October 31, 2016 at 12:36 pm #1648068Thank You. I had seen everyone posting pictures on some other websites and Facebook pages with the same thing and I really wanted to get one with the prairie behind me instead of the farm machinery but for some odd reason the exposure caught the sun just perfect. (Very Lucky!)
