Scouting for turkeys

Man this should be a good year for turkey hunting. We just went out scouting and seen turkeys in all 3 fields I target. Including 6 Tom’s. The kid is hoping to get one with his bow this year. And I’m excited to watch.
On a side note the fields are soft and the ko2s every one rants about are trash. They turned to slicks immediately. I won’t be buying these tires again. Back to the falcons next go around

The only thing those tires are good for is looks and throwing gravel road rocks all over your paint. I havent seen squat for turkeys where I hunt but have seen them in other areas.

And by the way you need to weigh that RAM down with a bunch of stickers. Better traction that way.

I’m going to hunt season B and just started doing some scouting this past weekend for it, so about a month in advance.

I don’t know that it necessarily helps to pattern turkeys this far in advance because their behavior will change. I was mostly trying to pin down the roost, which I think I found.

I also asked for permission at 3 properties and they all gave me the go ahead.

My son has been out scouting some and getting ideas where he is going to take everyone. He’s up to 3 others besides himself to try and get birds for. Luckily he has access to lots of different properties.

Just tagged a big tom the other day, he was going to cross the road but he stalled then flew right into my windshield at 60mph. Feathers everywhere. He had about a 9″ bread

I almost hit one this morning as well thought for sure the car in the oncoming lane was going to hit it but it flew just in time. Then a little later had 13 deer cross the road all in one big group.

Working in maple Grove today and the turkeys are thick over here. They seem to hang around the business district pretty tight. Safest turkeys around I’d say.

those critters are starting to be a problem in metro areas for sure. i know of people who have been chased by them when walking or on bikes.

The comeback of the wild turkey in Minnesota is a Great success story. Once almost, if not totally extinct in Minnesota. From 29 adult turkeys released in Houston County between 1971 and 1973 to now more than a estimated population of 70,000 ( Many believe that Est. to be on the low side ) I believe they now can be found all the way to far northern Minnesota and into Canada. I started hunting them in the mid 80’s in Houston County myself. #’s then were still rather low but I managed to harvest a bird 2 out of my 1st 3 years of hunting them. It sure was a lot more work then than it is today.

I think in my little area of the world there is far less turkeys than there used to be 15-20 years ago.

Growing up in linwood they used to peck our basement screens out of the windows. And they used to chase us at the bus stop and at our bmx track. We’d have to pelt them with rocks to get them to leave.

I think last spring was terrible for them by me. Turkeys all over the river bottoms on nests before it all flooded around May 6ish. Thats alot of destroyed eggs.

A buddy hunts them in Roseau so yeah, they are pretty much everywhere.

My wife had one knock her off her bike and then continue to chase over by lake Nokomis last fall. Couple guys at the 5-8 club had to chase it off. Since she wasn’t hurt it’s funny as heck..wish I had video.

One will also backup traffic every so often on the Diamond Lake exit. My do gooder neighbors will try and shoo it away until it turns on them. They are mean SOB’s.

Definitely don’t want to be on the receiving end of those spurs. They can do some damage.

Season A this year in SE MN. See them regularly all through central and northern MN too on way up. Good luck to all. toast

I asked the kid if he wants to bow or gun hunt for them, he said the bow was the only option. Sure glad he falls in line with dad. Guns are for fun, the bow is for hunting. X bows are for old people, injured guys , or guys who ( i won’t finish that sentence.)

Last spring’s turkey harvest in MN was the highest ever recorded in state history.

They are an amazing success story of conservation and a very adaptable bird.

My uncle owned a sanitation company years ago when there was the guy on the back of the garbage trucks to empty the cans. He said sometimes one guy had to use the lid of the can to fend off a turkey while the other guy emptied the can.

I would beg to differ on the whole success story thing. I would say it was more of an introduction of an invasive species. Those nest robbers do nothing but displace and kill native species that once thrived. Thank goodness there’s none on our land or anywhere close by. Those things are hated almost as much as wolves around here.

There is zero data or studies that indicate turkeys are “nest robbers” of other upland game birds. None. It’s nothing but misinformation being spread without fact.

So there is data and studies saying they don’t?

That’s what I don’t get. Why isn’t there a daily limit on them like any other bird?
