Scotty downrigger stacker release clip

When using the Scotty power grip plus stacker release clips with the small wire clip and the 2 line releases, where you clip on the small wire clip around the downrigger cable, then clip the shorter lined clip to the downrigger cable just above the wire clip, to hold your release at your desired depth above the downrigger ball, then clip in the fishing line to the longer leadered release clip. So I think I’ve got that much figured out, but what I’m confused about is…. When a fish hits and I’m raising the downrigger ball, Do I need to stop the retrieve and remove the stacker clip set up, or is it supposed to hit the boom pulley and pop the other release then just slide down the line til it hits the ball? When I tried using it, one time it popped loose and slide down the line to the ball, and the other time it sort of jammed at the pulley. Didn’t break the cable because I stopped it when I saw it start to jamb. So, how are these supposed to be used when raising the downrigger? Are they supposed to self release from the Downrigger cable, or am I supposed to set up an autostop bead and stop, and then manually release it? I don’t want to break the Downrigger cable and loose a 12lb ball. Thanks for any guidance.
