Hello all. I just acquired another .17 HMR rifle. It is a Savage 93r17. Heavy barrel with thumbhole stock. Not sure if I like the thumbhole or not but Ill give it a whirl. Anyways on my other 17HMR I have a Burris Rimfire 3-9×40. Its a sweet light small game killer. Anyways on this rifle I want to have more magnification. Say up to 14 or 15 power. Any scope recommendations that wont break my fragile bank? You opinions and insights are appreciated.

I’ve been extremely happy with my Vortex scopes. very affordable with a lifetime warranty. The glass is pretty darn good on the few I have (Diamondback HP and Viper models).

Never pay full price for optics as they go on sale quite frequently.

When choosing a scope, make sure you choose mounts as well. Spend a few extra pennies and get some descent ones.

Like you I’m also in the market for a few rimfire scopes this spring. I have a marlin .22 Mag and a single shot bull barrel .17 that are in need of new scope. All my research points to one of 4 choices:

Nikon P Rimfire – This scope seems to be on top of a lot of reviews – It is a bit on the pricy side

Nikon Prostaff – Also seems to be rated well – A little less $ but still what I’d call a Midrange priced scope

Vortex crossfire – Gets good ratings – Once again a little on the pricy side

Simmons .22Mag – It seems like in a lower cost scope this one seems to always get good reviews – I know they have been around for a long time. Someone who has recently purchased a few of them said they are not as good as he thinks they use to be – Not sure what has changed, but he says they are not as clear as his older ones.

Finding a scope designed for rimfires over about a 12X is hard to find. Several do have them offered in 4-12

Agree with good bases and mounts. I appreciate that tidbit but already know it. Better off with good bases and rings but lesser scope than the other way around. Im very systematic and careful when mounting scopes. I have torque wrenchrs, levels, ring lapping tools etc. Ill make this rifle shoot better than most other people’s.

fishthumper, the scope doesnt havebto be designed for rimfires. Any riflescope will work well.

Appreciate all the helps. I ended up going with Bushnell Elite 3500 4-12×40. Found at a great price.
