scooters

These electric scooters are causing a problem. They are a blast to ride, but they are clearly causing accidents in the city now. Just yesterday I was walking on the cross walk across the street (when I had my walk signal) and a scooter buzzed me so close I felt the wind burst. The guy blew right through the intersection too. I yelled at him and he just kept on going like he was on another planet. Just last week I saw a scooter rider run into a pedestrian on the sidewalk too.

Duluth has now mandated a 10 mph speed limit for e-bikes, pedal bikes, and scooters on their busy Lake Walk.

Something needs to be done about these things. One of these times a serious accident is going to occur. They should not be flying up and down the sidewalks in the city.

I was just thinking about this the other day. There are more electric scooters, bikes than actual human powered ones these days. Those things can really fly too! People think they are exercising LOL.

HA! Go to Austin sometime, they are everywhere and people get hurt all the time. I was there for one weekend and saw 3 people take a digger off of them. And at least 2 more ambulances getting loaded up. But I don’t think we need any laws to protect people from themselves tho.

They are green so there can be no downside right?

Worst I’ve seen them in in Washington DC. Tens of thousands of people walking pretty much everywhere up-and-down the mall and then you got those things buzzing around. After a day or so, I constantly found myself looking over my shoulder. They’re constant and they’re out of nowhere. I’m sure accidents happen all the time between pedestrians and riders but I doubt they’re too serious. Once they ride out into traffic, though, it would be a different story.

What’s going to happen when a scooter rider plows into me? We’re both probably going to get hurt. If they were forced to ride in the bike lane that might be a solution but cruising up and down the sidewalks is an accident waiting to happen. And stop blowing right through a red light. Wait your turn like everyone else does.

I see this all the time with people riding on the walking paths. There are clear stop signs and road crossings, but no one ever stops yet it would be the vehicles fault should they collide.

Another reason to avoid downtown I guess. We do not have this problem in Blaine. Honestly not to be an a hole but if someone buzzed me like that I might accidently knock there sweet scooter riding but to the ground. Some lessons are needed to learn the hard way.

That actually crossed my mind after that guy buzzed my tower yesterday.

Its not necessarily just down town though. Clearly a place like Duluth’s lake walk has an issue too if they have to implement and enforce a speed limit. I haven’t been on a college campus recently, but I have to imagine they could be an issue there too.

There is a vendor up here who rents the things out. Maybe we can require them to clip baseball cards to the wheels.

I imagine you aging like Matt Damon at the end of Saving Private Ryan as you posted this…

Seriously though I think they are already not allowed on sidewalks in MN? There is just no enforcement. Hard for me to say they should be on the street though with how terrible a lot of drivers are, the lack of good bike lanes in most places, and the much more serious accidents that would occur.

Just look over your shoulder when walking. Or get a scooter your self and join them

I think they’re great as a mode of transportation – people just need to not be idiots on them, I know that can be a lot to ask. Keep them off the sidewalks and start writing them tickets when they do stupid sh!t like buzzing through red lights and stop signs.

“Exercise” lol People are so F’n lazy. I really get a kick out of all the E-bikes I see now on state bike trails and MTB trails. The other thing is how they’re all the rage with hunters now but previously there was a basically non-existent tiny minority of hunters using pedal bikes.

by scooter do you mean like a yamaha zuma?

I plan on getting either a zuma 125cc or an e-bike next spring. Mainly cause they look fun but i would also use it to commute to work.

As to them being hazardous, yeah i can see how they would cause accidents. More laws aint gonna help that though. Like anything else its up to you to look out for the idiots and avoid them

i have not heard of this. What do they do just cruise down trails and jump off when they see something to shoot lol?

Somewhat, but they also use it to get back in the woods farther, faster and quieter than an ATV or going on foot. Less scent trail too.

They are actually a blast to ride. I have the Bird app and used it a few times, but definitely not on the sidewalk. I rarely use it now because I don’t have to walk very far when I’m in Mpls. It would take me longer to get it unlocked and start using it than it would for me to walk one block.

Everybody drives 1000cc atvs where I live. Probably toss you a beer if they got too close. Only 90 minutes from cities but feels like a lot further waytogo

The 16th Street Mall is in downtown Denver. I believe the scooters are programmed to stop providing power when they go in the mall area – maybe something like that needs to be programmed in certain parts of the city as well?

Working the other day driving around on/near rice street this one punk was flying around weaving in and out of cars and pedestrians at like 25 mph. Right on rice street too. It is ridiculous. Should AT LEAST limit the speed on them somewhat…

Could be a self correcting problem when they start getting mangled and word spreads but given how things are handled these days they are more likely to severely limit automobile traffic to protect the scooter/biker people from themselves.

Psh jumping off is for bad shots. Seems like an efficient way to grouse hunt. Pedal down the trails with your shotgun in 1 hand, ground pounding every grouse you come across! jester

LOL yeah I guess that’s one option but I think they’re intended as a quieter and more portable alternative to ATVs. Notice I didn’t say cheaper – there’s a pile of companies selling hunting E-bikes now and some of them aren’t any cheaper than ATVs.
