Wonder who has has to deal with this and what kind of sucsess you had in releiving this horrible, misserable, spleepless pain.
Doc has done little. Muscle relaxers but they are really weak!!!
    Trying Chiropactor shortly.
    Alieve and IBU’s don’t do a thing.
    Thanks in advance

Have they looked at your hips for arthritis or excessive wear? Hip replacement took care of about 80% of the sciatic pain I had in my lower back and left leg.

Stretching does it for me. When I don’t do my back exercises and stretches it creeps back.

Been using the tens units lately, working too much, love that thing. Hurts pulling the pads off but man it’s worth it.

I do Yoga – really helps my back pain.
Also, and this sounds ludicrous BUT, the single best thing I EVER did for this was not to carry my wallet in my back pocket anymore.
Try it for a month – it will WORK!!!

I used to get grief for putting my wallet in front pocket but it helped my back tremendously.

Chiro should hopefully help, things the other guys mentioned are good ideas. My dad had back surgery a long time ago and has had to do stretching every morning or it gets bad

    Exercise helps.
Though, kind of difficult in initial stages of the sciatic nerve pain.
I had it last fall. September whole leg numb, shooting pain – puke kind of pain. Took until November when i could lift my heel off the ground. By Christmas i could feel my toes and actually jump.
Chiropractor didn’t seem to help much. I quit going after October, but am back to monthly or so visits.

Horizontal Mamba and deer hunting were the main activities that seemed to help and i wasn’t capable of doing those until November.

Right now i am dealing with back spasms. Last 48 hours. Its pretty awesome roll

A $200 inversion table shipped to my door 10 days before a scheduled disc surgery helped so much that I cancelled the surgery after 4-5 days of use. Worth a try.

I get terrible pain periodically from my Sciatic, and a couple trips to the Chiro always seem to get me straightened out. One time I could barely walk, and it took 3 Chiro trips to be back to normal, but usually just 1 or 2 trips needed since. I had never been to a Chiro before, and was very skeptical but it works for me.

Try doing 25 sit-ups a day. knees flat on the ground, don’t hook your feet under anything, all the way up and all the way down. If you cant do 25 to start us a pillow under the small of your back. just went through this till I saw a DR (Physiologist?). Asked him about the inversion tables. He didn’t recommend them because of the danger of a venous stroke. I work with 2 guys who love theirs.
The sit-ups took care of my pain in a couple of weeks, just need to keep doing them,

Chiro helped but the finally set up an MRI and once that was done
mine was so bad they got me scheduled for surgery.

Mine got so bad I could not walk because of the pain was on my hands and knees only way I could get around and sleeping on the floor helped. Finally had surgery I will never take walking for granted again. I am 100% now and keep doing my stretches’ just so I am not stiff in the morning.

Surgery is pretty simple one day affair biggest thing is don`t do any bending over and the reason is not to pull the stiches out.

I have dealt witch back issues since I was 16, most of the time the chiropractor was able to fix the issues. About 5 years ago I had my first surgery after 3 months of pain and numbness in my legs. Two years later I had a second surgery for a different disc and have been great ever since. You have to be careful if you have numbness for prolonged periods of time as it can cause nerve damage. There are some ortho urgent care facilities in the cities that can do same day MRIs and get things figured out if it gets bad. I have used Tria and Summit Ortho, Tria was good and Summit was incredible.

I do what Jeff does 25 sit ups every day then I also tuck my feet to my butt and lift up 3-5 times every day. Helps big time when it does flare up again it goes away faster.

Stretches and stay active. If it’s muscle related, you should hopefully come out of it soon. Ask your doc for the three drug cocktail. Muscle relaxer, pain med, and a steroid.

If it’s a disc, rest for a few days than begin strength and exorcising…this will take a few months.

I’ve had a previous back surgery (microdicsectomy? sp), when it flared up again in a different spot, I figured I was in for another surgery. Doc did an MRI, and then told me do do the sit-ups. fingers crossed….

All good advise. Stretching top of the list. Chiro will get you back in alignment, but if your muscles are so wound up you will just go right out of whack again.

Lose weight. Stop smoking. And like Dave said, don’t sit on your wallet all day.

For me, I had bad sciatica all through my 30’s. One other thing I did that helped probably more than anything – Sold the big tiller and went console steer on the boat.

Good luck. This can be fixed! Everyone is different. If I ever did get sciatica again, I would like to try the inversion table. I think that would have helped me a lot.

Thank you everyone for the vaulable replies.
Chiro seemed to give me some releif this morning.
Like someone mentioned, they would like a couple more shots at it then stated exersises will be all most a must.
I agree with the wallet thing as the last week it hurt to much to have in back pocket.
Dang, that could be as hard as habit to break as when I quit smoking. doah

The doc also did mention a method of traction which I bet is reffering to inversion and might be a good option for me.

Find a good sports massage professional. It will hurt as he/she works you over but it does wonders.
I have a muscle behind the scalpia that goes to the spine and it knots up and the only way to get ritt of it is to get worked over by the masage therapist.
He also uses those glass bulbs to pull toxins out, it really works.
If doesn’t hurt getting worked over find someone else. And drink a lot of water after to flush out the lactic acid realesed from the muscles.

Sorry to hear your dealing with this, Mike. Sounds like you’re on the right track so far. A good chiropractor will help you get enough relief to work on the healing, stretching and strengthening you will need to get back to feeling better consistently. A few things I will add to all the other suggestions that I feel have helped me are to make sure you’re staying well hydrated, Omega fatty acid supplements as recommended (took a year of consistent consumption to perceive a difference) and, if/when able, I highly recommend classic style cross country skiing in the winter months for an all in one and dare I say entertaining fitness activity. Really helped tighten up the core and trim some of my “liquid” retention…lol. That and I still visit my chiropractor every 6 weeks whether my back has been bothering me or not. Regardless, from one creeky back to another, I hope you can get to feeling better again quickly!

Drinking cherry juice or eating dried cherries also helps flush out toxins.

I have dealt it off and on for about 10 years. The ONLY thing that has helped is doing core exercises and stretching religiously. When I start feeling it again I know I need to get back on the wagon and start doing my workouts and stretching. It’s not an easy answer or one most people want to hear but it’s the only one that actually works. Google stretches specifically for sciatica pain. There are many.

Keep moving if possible. I have a herniated disc. Had a spinal steroid injection. Didn’t help much. Stretching, massage, and exercise helped the most. Sitting on the couch watching fishing shoes just seized it up worse. I couldn’t even raise my right foot for a few months. It did get better. Good luck. If you find a solution let me know. Thanks

I carry my wallet in my back pocket but it’s maybe a quarter inch thick. How much $hit do you guys have in your wallet that it messes up your back? Is it like putting a 2×4 in your pocket? If it is….why?

I work with a guy, no exaggeration 2″ thick!! I bet he has a Blockbuster membership card in there ) Think if all the time you spend on your -ss car, office. He walks with a limp. My chiro suggested it and it really works. I need a credit card and some cash and my insurance card. Money clip in front pocket or in a jacket.
