I’ve never tried applying for a special hunt until today.

Went to the local gas station, and the only way I could apply for a special muzzleloader hunt is having to be forced to buy a muzzleloader tag first?? (which I didn’t and aborted the mission)

    Is that right?

What the hell sense does that make? If I did buy it and wasn’t successful in the draw then I burn $34 (or obviously have to hunt elsewhere)??

You’d have to hunt else where.
I just applied for st croix state Park for the 3rd weekend of rifle. I had to buy my rifle license in order to apply. The application was free. But some application have a cost. Ripley was 14 bucks to apply, no garuntee to get drawn

Sense? I find none of that when abiding my MN regs and their online portal.

I had to buy a regular gun deer tag in order to put in for a special firearm hunt. No worries either way but odd when compared to other states I hunt.

Figured it’s just another chance for the state to pinch pennies out of a person.

That is exactly how it works. If not successful in drawing the LE hunt, then it just turns into a “regular” muzzleloader tag.

Just experienced this applying for an antlerless permit. Had to buy the regular deer license first/ in tandem.

What the hell sense does it make? By requiring that you buy the license in order to apply shows that you’re committed to the hunt. If it was totally free to apply there would be more people applying and then likely some people who were selected in the lottery but then decide not to hunt at all for whatever reason, and that wastes a tag/opportunity that someone who really wants to hunt could have used instead. It weeds out some of the on the fence/half-a$$ed guys from applying and wasting a tag.

It shows you are committed to A hunt… not necessarily the hunt you wanted. I think they should have you pay half the license cost when you apply for a Doe permit or any special city hunt.. and if your drawn, the other half is applied. That would cut down on the people applying and not showing up.

Lots of nonresident big game tags are lottery drawn with a non-refundable fee. This isn’t anything new. They charge you 60 bucks just to enter the lottery to deer hunt in Iowa. And even if you don’t get drawn, they keep that fee.

I get the idea of commitment, but I think they’re doing it completely backwards.

I don’t hunt many other states, but I’m not aware of any that have you pay for the full tag just to apply.

Minnesota does their bear tags “the right way.” You pay for points and buy the tag when drawn.

The Iowa example is the same. You don’t pay the full $650 just to apply and possibly not get it. You pay for a non-refundable $60 application.

Wouldn’t the state make more money doing this with their special deer hunts?

Many states out west also require you front the full tag/license/application fee, and then if you DONT draw they refund all the money other than the cost to apply.

Wait, so paying $60 for a non-refund application to Iowa with no guarantee to even hunt at all is ok, but paying $34 to guarantee the ability to hunt AND the possibility for a special hunt isn’t ok?

Correct me if I am wrong but if you buy a gun tag you stuck hunting the specific zone you chose. If you do not get chosen to hunt in the special hunt you would still have to hunt in that zone. I know for a couple of the special hunts there is not that much public land and if you do not own land it maybe tough to use that tag.

I do not gun hunt so I maybe wrong on this.

That is not correct. I think they just use the zone information at time of license sale for hunting pressure/harvest data.

Correct waldo to my knowledge you claim your area when buying the license but can hunt other areas. However if were talking a doe permit that is good for only the area selected.

This is correct. I just got a tag for Marksville but I can hunt any where in mn with it. It is for hunting pressure numbers data

Yes if you get a special permit then that special tag is only for that area. Your regular tag is good anywhere.

Under lotteries on the MN DNR website, it currently says: “Lottery results will be available later in September”.
