The irony of course is Thurs morning is suppose to be the coldest of the bunch. Maybe we’re doing a disservice to kids by not teaching them to not wear shorts and a hoodie to school in sub zero weather.

School has been cancelled for 3 days. Bold north? NOT.

Just about everyone was about ready to hang some guy by his nuts for (legally) passing a bus because he should have been more safe around kids going to school. Then, when school is cancelled for unsafe roads/weather for these same kids, people freak and wonder who could possibly making such a decision. Interesting!
When I was a kid, up north mind you, we got hit by buses all the time and we never complained.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 29, 2019 at 8:13 am #1830434a lot of it is $$$$. Federal funding for schools is based on attendance numbers each day. If a given percentage of the kids are kept home on any given day at some point the cost of operating the schools physical plant and paying the teachers becomes the tipping point.
Kids’ safety is another consideration especially those being bused. The comments on kids not knowing how to dress for cold gets handed squarely on the parents….many of them don’t know how to dress for this either.
And Riverruns….thanks for getting that rural mail delivered even in the snow and the cold!
January 29, 2019 at 9:00 am #1830460For those of you who say busses won’t run in the cold, does that make the northern busses magic? Does that make my kenworth magic? Why wouldn’t a Bus run in that cold. Diesel additive is used in fuel. My old 97 powerstroke would start in this weather if she was prepped right.
Even with those additives that are supposed to help them from gelling up, they still can with extreme cold. Wouldn’t be good to have a stranded bus full of kids who don’t always dress for the weather with -60 wind chill.
January 29, 2019 at 9:34 am #1830473I’m not saying I agree or disagree with the school cancelations but if it’s all about the kids safety why do many of the schools up north (where its colder!) still have school? Are those kids just tougher? Or just less important?
Getting a 30-40 ft school bus around unplowed city streets is far more difficult than driving around a town like Alexandria.
Throw in traffic gridlock with 1000’s of buses full of kids trying to navigate through it all.
So that being said no you are not tougher because you were a kid 20- 30 years ago,and no kids and people who live up North are not tougher today either.I’m not sure you understood me and I suppose that’s my fault. I’ll try again.
I was just wondering how the schools way up north (not Alexandria because we always close too) justify not closing? For example Warroad has nearly the coldest temps in the state yet they rarely close. Just a question.January 29, 2019 at 9:42 am #1830476Anybody who doesn’t think it’s cold out just step outside for a few minutes.
shady5Posts: 491January 29, 2019 at 9:50 am #1830478Does it really matter if they miss a few days? If you believe so, then try recalling the exact subject matter of any two consecutive days of school in your entire educational career. It’s the process that’s important, not every singular minute.
We would all be cheering on the guy talking about pulling his kid out for two days of fishing; what’s the difference?
January 29, 2019 at 9:55 am #1830483Took me 1.5 hours to clean the snow off my yacht and dock yesterday. Where are all those kids that are looking for extra money….they weren’t in school! LOL!
January 29, 2019 at 10:01 am #1830484I looked at the boy who was already staying home for his first ever snow day and said, “Dude, you just got a bonus weekend. Let’s get packed.”
You guys are looking at this wrong.I admire your ability to make the best of it. Unfortunately, work is always killing my fun. And Mrs. Grouse is hobbling around on crutches after a hip rebuild and can’t be left on her own. Dang, all I need is my dog to run away and my truck to break down and I’ve got the makings for a fine blues or country song…
The other irony of this is they cancelled school on the wrong day. Now they say we’re going to go back Thursday morning when it’s -20? Right.

January 29, 2019 at 10:40 am #1830506I’ve been outside numerous times today. No big deal. I understand why they closed school but think it unnecessary. Its character building and that is very important to children too.
It also teaches them to dress appropriately for the weather, cover your skin, dont face the wind, etc. All good things to know.January 29, 2019 at 10:55 am #1830512Anybody who doesn’t think it’s cold out just step outside for a few minutes.
It is cold out today. I’m working inside a building that’s poly enclosed and back and forth to my big truck hauling tools in and out. Even my methonal mix water is trying to slush up. Porta John’s arnt heated and it’s no fun. But that’s life I suppose. Gotta pay the bills.

January 29, 2019 at 11:00 am #1830517I’m a whimp & it’s ok. I went to the store and bought a couple of books this morning. I’m now going to hunker down and read for the next couple of days. When I need a break i’ll watch the radio row coverage from the Super Bowl or maybe take a power nap.
I’ve done my time in the elements and now unless absolutely necessary i’m done.

Just make sure you have the expression on your face that you’re comfortable with for the rest of the day…

Here Here!!
-20 and was heading out snowmobiling. Mom said I wasn’t going out it this cold weather. Had a great time.
Today and 50 years later…I’ll sit here and turn my space heater up.

Vodka and pickle juice with a dash of soy….he’s probably sitting on the pot.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 29, 2019 at 11:39 am #1830547A buddy called a while ago about plans we had for Saturday. He said his kid, a sophomore, called him at work earlier and asked if he could go skiing since there was no school. Judging by the sound of dis-belief in his voice I’ll assume his reply was nada. Can’t go the corner for a bus because its too cold, but not to cold to go skiing…..great thought processes.

I think 16’s response deserves a lot more attention than what it is getting!!! Right on bro. Posted here so everyone can read this again.

kabefisherman11Posts: 201January 29, 2019 at 12:34 pm #1830574Ok so the temps are going to be very dangerous the next few days. To me I’m ok with no school. In weather like this a simple accident can turn into a LIFE THREATENING SITUATION! Stay off the roads if you can and remember that outside of the metro area rural districts might have a 30 to 45 minute response time for first responders. A bus going into the ditch in the summer no big deal. In these temps with that time frame LIFE THREATENING!
philtickelsonInactiveMahtomedi, MNPosts: 1678January 29, 2019 at 1:50 pm #1830611Most people(especially non-northerners) can’t really comprehend how cold -50 is.
That is 82 degrees below freezing. Think of that temperature gap on the other side, how different does a 32 degree day feel from a 114 degree day? Well we are that many degrees colder than freezing.
I’m not actually sure if the feeling/relativeness works out like that, but really makes you think doesn’t it. I’ll let you guys think about that and propose no one posts a reply until you’ve had time to digest and process that information. Thank you.
