School has been cancelled for 3 days. Bold north? NOT.

Due to the blizzard of the century that buried St. Paul in a massive 3 inches of snow, school was canceled for today.

Now I just got word that due to “extreme cold” school will be canceled Tuesday and Wednesday as well. Come on! What the hell?

I know for a fact I went to school from K to 12 in MN and NOT here in the Softie South of the burbs, and we NEVER had a day off due to “cold”. The coldest I remember it being was -31, but we could have had colder weather than that and we had school every friggin day.

Fast forward to college at SCSU, the SOB administration REFUSED to cancel school when we had -35 AND sustained winds at 25 gusting to 40. This was the storm that prompted the NWS to revise the windchill formula because under the old system winchills were -125.

So now we got a whopping 3 inches of snow and it’s gonna get a little nippy out for 2 days and we have to close the whole world? Gawd we’ve become such a bunch of wusses they ought to rename the state Wussisota.

Lower unit check time. Is there anything down there Minnesota? Bold north? Remember? Northern hardy? Any of this ring a bell?

If I could see my lawn, I’d be yelling at a bunch of kids to get off it.

Ouch. I haven’t heard anything about Tuesday and Wednesday yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if our district follows suit.

I got up to clear the drive this morning and had to deal with 4 degree temps and 4.5″ of snow!!! I have no clue why they felt it necessary to call it off at 9 pm last night.

My guess? Most people use the schools as a day care service. If they are closing schools they need to do it early to let parents make arrangements for the kids.

    I don’t follow you.

Except that I had to miss a day of work once due to getting my hand stuck in my 3 year old’s car seat while trying to move it quickly from car to car. Did I say car seat? It felt more like having my hand stuck in a damn bear trap.

So I’m out there in the garage screaming in agony for Mrs Grouse to get the gawddamn jaws of life to help free me or the Sawzall to cut off my arm and stop the pain. Meanwhile, just feet away in the kitchen, Mrs Grouse–who will wake up from a dead sleep in the middle of the night if one of the babies even farts–has gone completely deaf due to the need to focus on an intense Facebooking session. “So, like, her husband actually SAID that right in the middle of Grays Anatomy? OMG, what a…”

There was nothing left to do. The blackness was closing in. The light was fading. And then a miracle! I realized I WAS SAVED! I had Facebook! I could Messenger my own wife to come out and save me.

Me: DAMMMMMIT!!!! I have my right hand stuck in Tommy’s car seat. Would you get OUT here and help me.

    Mrs. Grouse: What?

Me: Does it really freaking matter what? I mean, really, doesn’t it give you a clue that some bad 5hit might be happening to your husband when I have to freaking Messenger you to get you to come 14 feet outside and save me from an amputation of my right FRIGGIN hand?

Mrs. Grouse: OK, just calm down.

    Me: Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrah.

Seriously, any of you police/fire etc first responders out there, have you ever had to cut a car seat off of an adult male’s hand?

North branch is in school today. Thank the lord. If 3 to 4 inches of snow stops school that’s a joke. And what about international falls. They are in school at 40 below

Grouse, I can not tell you how amazed I am that you were able to both work the phone and type those messages with one good hand! Funny, how wives are almost a little bit like small town hardware store guys. When you wanna be left alone to get one bolt, there’s 4 of em there to “over” help you. But if you actually need one the store is vacant like some alien abduction movie!

On the wussie school closures, alotta them city folks sure don’t have the thick blood that northerners do. I bet the coats and boots these kids have these days are 10 times what you had! Not that many wear them, it’s not cool I guess.

Was it last year when Minneapolis or St. Paul DIDN’T close school and the weather turned out to be worse than expected? And every news station in the metro covered the story about the kids who didn’t get home until 9:00pm. There’s just one reason why school administrators are ultra cautious. When little Jonny walks to school in -50 wind chill, forgets his gloves, and gets frost bite, it is no longer little Jonny’s or his parents problem, it’s the schools problem. Admin has to weight the cost vs. benefit of a major issue such as the above, a bus roll over, or anything similar. Times have changed, and schools have to adjust.

I think that the cancel for this cold the next 2 days is fine, its stupid yes. But also remembered the way they take the temp is actually different from years past so yes I went to school in -30 but it probably was more like -10 – 0 below. Not truer -40 below like there predicting.

In weather like this I think they should get the non-violent jailbirds out with shovels to dig out the elderly’s sidewalks and driveways. Salvation Army has coats and caps and gloves. The jails could save some money not having to by weights workout gear…let mother nature exercise these dinks while they earn their evening meals..

Yeah closing two days is fine lol.

WHAT…Dangerously cold wind chills expected. Wind chills 40 to
55 below zero by late tonight through Tuesday morning, 35 to 50
below zero Tuesday afternoon, 45 to 65 below zero Tuesday
evening through Wednesday morning, and 45 to 55 below zero
    Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

Kids safety needs to come first. I’m sure (maybe?) that the rant was tongue in cheek.

School districts need to send scouts out the night before. If there are no hookers & drug dealers on the corner close schools.

True story, dad was a farm kid and used to walk to school in Grafton ND. uphill both ways, -100, all the classics. One day mom, also a farm kid from the other side of the state, called B.S.! He had been neglecting to mention they had a house in town. Only a few blocks from school and Grafton was too flat to have any incline rotflol rotflol

40 years on, haven’t let dad forget this story! Still a family classic.

I’m with you on this, Grouse! It seems kids today get way more snow days (and for some reason, cold days) versus when I was in school. I don’t get it… This is Minnesota, people! Most schools are heated from what I recall. coffee

Oh! I thought we were just going through the list of things that we all did as kids and still survived, therefore everyone’s a wussy today because they aren’t as stupid, oops, tough, not as tough.

I’m not saying I agree or disagree with the school cancelations but if it’s all about the kids safety why do many of the schools up north (where its colder!) still have school? Are those kids just tougher? Or just less important?

    Exactly.

It’s about before and after school, not school itself.

A lot of town/city kids have a healthy walk to the bus stop in the morning, and the same walk in the afternoon…..

The rural and small town kids get dropped off at their front door……pussies )
