Scariest Four Seconds In A Long Time….

Saw my life flash before by eyes earlier today.

I tossed a few things in the truck and was headed over to Wisconsin to try and fill a doe tag with the bow.

    That’s when it happened.

The roads were good, visibility was good. I just had to make my way to the woods.

As I was coming down the St. Croix hill headed towards Taylor’s Falls on Highway 8, another vehicle came into my lane.

It was crazy how fast everything happened, but how long it felt. The cliche of time freezing has never been more true for me.

As I rounded a curve in the road (the one by the vertical galvanized culvert) I came into the straight-away. There was another truck headed up hill (towards me), about a quarter mile away. As the distance between us closed (we were both going approximately 55-60 mph), I saw the truck start to drift across the center-line.

One second later, and he was completely in my lane! I had just a second or so to react. I pushed down on the brakes and pulled my truck to within inches of the guardrail, so close I thought for sure I’d be scraping it, my mirror was easily over the top of it….

I simultaneously laid on the horn and saw my kids faces flash before me. There was nowhere for me to go…..I was going to die or be seriously injured.

At the last millisecond the other truck swerved back towards his lane. How our mirrors didn’t hit is beyond me. We were on a driver-to-driver collision course that would have changed or ended our lives forever.

After it happened, I just froze behind the wheel and coasted for a bit. I couldn’t believe what had just happened and how close it was.

It took me about 30 seconds to realize I should chase him down and kill him, but the urge passed as fast as he did and I went on with my day.

I don’t know if the other driver was distracted by the river or on the phone, but please, please, please don’t put yourself in that situation.

Concentrate on driving, so everyone can go home at the end of the day.

Just another reason to put the phones down and buckle up. Stuff happens and when it does it happens fast.

Glad you made it ok. waytogo

glad you are ok B! I almost plowed into a merging semi trailer on my way home tonight in the dark and steady rain. If the temps drop tonight, the roads will be slick so drive safe all.

Glad everything went ok Bman! I had a similar situation one night on the east side of Mille Lacs. Driving south see an oncoming vehicle, then about 1000 feet before we pass a truck behind him decides to cut into my lane and get alongside him. Before I knew it they were on top of me and I’m slamming on my brakes and steering into the ditch. Still relive that moment, and like you, thought about chasing him down to at least get a plate number, likely drunk, but instead gathered my self and kept on my way.

Scary stuff. Few years back in a ice/snow storm coming home from work on back roads around a corner I had a minivan coming sideways in my lane. Had to make a quick decision to hit the van or hit the ditch. I chose the deep snow covered ditch and had to pay for a tow truck to pull me out. Vehicles can be replaced, lives cant.

Still have the picture on my phone, tow truck had hell of time trying to pull me out

Glad you and the boys are ok. I know I was in a accident in July and still haven’t recovered from a driver running a stop sign.

My uncle lived through a head on.

He said the driver had her eyes open right to the bang. Dr. Said she was asleep at the wheel. Eyes are open but brain was napping.

So glad you just had high plod pressure for a while!

This exact thing happened to me between malmo and barnacles. My son and I flew up to get more gas, in the way back I was going around a left hand corner. There is no shoulder. A truck was in my lane and not turning. I took the tiny shoulder ditch, I went deep in to it and came back out and have no idea how we didn’t collide, nor me just roll.
I honestly pulled over and cried. as mason was in the back seat still just snoring away. He never had a clue what happened and I didn’t have a clue how it all happened.

I did whip around and chase guy right to malmo market, younger guy saying sorry he was on his phone.
If I didn’t have my son and it was just me I would have probably killed him

I had a similar thing happen to my young son and I when we were headed to Lake Sakakawea pulling my 5.3 Tyee. We were just starting to go up a hill when a truck came over the top of the hill completely in our lane. The driver appeared to stare straight ahead the whole time, totally unaware of the circumstances. It was about 7 am on a Sunday morning and I suspect alcohol or drugs but I’ll never know. I immediately had to drive my Blazer and boat completely into the bottom of the ditch at 60 mph to avoid a head-on crash. Luckily the ditch was smooth and there were no approach in the area to hit. Luckily there was no damage on my Blazer or boat and just drove back up on the road and continued to the lake. Looking in my mirror, the truck continues travelling in the wrong lane as it went over the next hill. I’ll never forget it. It shakes me to this day and this probably happened at least 25 years ago.

Glad your ok , I too have been in that situation and it didn’t turn out as well. These stories are not good for my nerves when I watch my 16 year old leave in her truck.

sorry not into the weed nor was I drinking. I use to work 47 miles from home and the roads were not always the best. The lady driving the minivan ended up stopping and apologized and felt very bad. Just a example of slow down in bad weather

Glad your Okay and reacted well under pressure. Just reading this made my heart rate spike. I think I would have circled and chased the SOB down before he killed someone else.

    Glad you’re OK B-Man.

It sure is a weird feeling when you life flashes in front of your eyes, and when you say your life flashes in front of your eyes – it does.

I’m still freaked out and haven’t even told my wife about it…..(and probably never will)

All that went through my head was my kids faces and that I was gonna die, gonna die, gonna die… shock

B-man glad you made it though. Now did you get a doe?

Negative, but it was still a nice afternoon in the stand. Saw two bucks, a tiny fork and a 2.5 year old 8 point

Got a good pic of the little one )

He had me pretty excited at 75 yards (thought it was a big doe), until he got closer

It was a good day to be alive

I’ve had 2, 1st was hitting black ice and sliding into other lane in front of an on coming garbage truck and the other was a young boy riding his bike across the street in front of me without looking. The second almost caused my heart to stop.

Glad your alright B Man. Way to many close calls like that. Seems like I have one or 2 every year. Almost the same way my buddy “Pickle” died a couple months ago near Holdingford.

Be careful out there folks. Make sure you’re never the “idiot”.

First let me say I’m glad you are alright.

I had two close calls, both while driving my motorcycle.

1st time I was crossing a longer bridge that was under construction with no one working at the time. Reduced to single lane with standard green, yellow, red stop and go lights at both ends. I am over halfway across the bridge on a green light. A semi pops over the hill from the opposing direction. As he is approaching I notice he is lining up with the single crossing lane and NOT slowing down. WTH, I know he can not possibly have a green light. I also know there is no other traffic and he must not see me and is going to run the red light.
About the time I am certain I am going to be a splat on his front bumper, he locks up the truck brakes and smoke starts billowing out from his tires. As he is sliding up to the ever narrowing opening, I meet him and squeeze past. Son of a ***** I was shaking.

The second time I was again on my motorcycle coming home from visiting my granddaughter. Very busy two lane HWY and I am approaching a string of vehicles from the opposite direction. Suddenly a car about 3 vehicles behind the lead vehicle pulls out to pass. I expect him to just slide back in, but he is coming right at me and his acceleration is eating up the space very quickly. In my mind I am thinking I have seen my granddaughter for the last time. About then, the vehicle coming at me, runs off the shoulder on my side, and flies past me, going into the shallow ditch. No point in turning around but I hope he learned something from it.

That hill is jinxed! I nearly had a head on going to ice fish in Wisconsin many years ago. Good light and good roads. The other driver slowly came across into my lane. I was scrambling to stop and find some room blowing the horn. finally, the other driver came to and swerved just missing me. As others said, emotions went from seeing your life pass in front of you to anger to feeling blessed to be alive. Ugh. I also had my minivan stall on that hill pulling a snowmobile. Took hours to get back going. I hate that place.
