I was coming home from the cabin yesterday on southbound I-35 and about 5 miles north of Hinkley a mountain lion crossed the road right in front of me. Apparently they are becoming more and more common in the state.

My brother claimed to see one while riding ATV trails in that area a few weeks ago. I figured he was just story telling

I’m wondering how come they arent more common in places like the Bwca of voyageurs national park. Lots of room and all the beavers you can eat. Sure the wolves and bears are there but lots of open area with food for them.
July 1, 2019 at 4:04 pm #1865342Shhh, there no Mountain Lions in the state lol
Yup, and the # of wolves hasn’t really changed in years, nor the range according to the DNR. Actual photographic proof outside that range, are outlier wolves that are probably sick or something…
kabefisherman11Posts: 201July 1, 2019 at 4:27 pm #1865354If I see either a Mountain Lion in Minnesota, or a Bigfoot anywhere, I’m shooting it on the spot to prove a point
ClownColorInactiveThe Back 40Posts: 1955July 1, 2019 at 5:52 pm #1865367Hate to break it to you guys but the MN DNR is very aware a cougar can make its way to MN…they simply explain to people that many of the sightings are false (as evident in the above link) and there is no evidence of breeding.
They shot one in Bloomington some years ago.
Tom schmittPosts: 1014July 1, 2019 at 6:01 pm #1865368As far as shooting a cougar is concerned that would be a violation of killing non-existent wildlife. Not sure what the fine is for killing something that doesn’t exist in the state?
July 1, 2019 at 6:07 pm #1865369A few years ago our next door neighbor lady had one walk right out of our driveway and across the road in front of her here outside of Cloquet. I figured it must have been after the other neighbors chickens.
I called the DNR field office in Cloquet and talked to the Wildlife guy and he said sightings were not that uncommon around here, and I was the second call they’d had about this cougar.
He said it was most likely a young male from NoDak looking for his own territory and wasn’t any problem.July 1, 2019 at 6:52 pm #1865375A number of years ago the FW was stranded coming home in a snowstorm in the middle of the night south of Prescott. While waiting for me to come rescue he a very large black cat, mountain lion size, crossed in front of the headlights on her car.
We’ve had neighbors catch one on a trail cam as well here in the bluffs of the Mississippi.

In ND we were told for decades by the game and fish department that there were no breeding populations of mt lions… then all the sudden we have a season on them and they’re doing studies on a fairly healthy population. Yea go and believe what they tell you
July 1, 2019 at 7:19 pm #1865378I had one in my yard in mound 4 years ago. I startled it when I went out to investigate the noise I heard at 2am. Scared the crap out of me. My cousin found one on his doorstep in excelsior while coming home late at night about 20 years ago. They are around from time to time. I understand they can and will cover a lot of ground throughout their life

I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there!
July 1, 2019 at 7:24 pm #1865381The most dangerous cougar is usually seen at the local watering hole alone, they are not rare, but dangerous never the less.
DTWPosts: 298July 1, 2019 at 7:35 pm #1865385I glassed what I thought were 2 coyotes crossing the Croix in the Afton Lakeland area about 5-7 years ago. Nope, 2 wolves. Coyotes were yipping at night for years before they moved in. Then when the wolves moved in, there was nothing with the Coyotes for a couple years. Now Coyotes are back. My friend who bow hunts the Minnesota river bottoms south suburbs has seen wolves 2-3 years ago. He said he saw and heard no coyotes for a year or so.
Lebanon Hills in Eagan had a cougar in 1998. It was reported in the paper and supposedly confirmed by DNR. I was living there at the time but who knows if true.
Wolves are definitely in Aitken County. I saw one twice last October from the stand.July 1, 2019 at 8:36 pm #1865402The most dangerous cougar is usually seen at the local watering hole alone, they are not rare, but dangerous never the less.
The nice thing is at least they’ll buy you a beer.

Sounds like the cougars from downtown will be waiting for you on your doorstep after bar close.
TimmyPosts: 1229July 1, 2019 at 8:52 pm #1865411A person I trust very much reported seeing a den, with a pair of cubs….. he reported it. He was told he was wrong. The MN DNR never acknowledges that they breed here. After that, my friend said, “F them, they don’t listen…..they only tell…..they do not listen.” I believe him.

I’ve been hearing around town that there have been a few different sightings up that way. My FW just saw one near Henriette off of 107 two Saturdays ago.. sightings are becoming more common the last few years. My dad saw one last fall down between Linwood & Bethel too.

You must be a biologist to put all that together. Yes, at some point, if the population grows, breeding might happen. But until we know it’s happening, I highly doubt they gonna confirm it. And why would they? Because of the 2-3 sightings a year?
Some day they might have proof…right now they don’t.
July 2, 2019 at 9:18 am #1865473This thread makes me laugh. Somehow it seems like the DNR is always conspiring against us.

x2
Also, it’s not like cougars have a bloodlust for human flesh. You’re much more likley to be mauled by the lab down the street or get hit by a car.
July 2, 2019 at 4:26 pm #1865583We dont have them, or wolves, or bears in Illinois either. DNR basically says that coyotes are wearing costumes. But….beginning last Jan, 01, they are all protected species. Lol. Thilly coyotes.
