Does anyone have one of these guns? I’d never heard of them before. I hunt rifle zone, but my friends that hunt shotgun have been talking about it. I’m sure cause it shoots slugs, it’s considered a shotgun, even though it’s built like a rifle.
I’d love to hear some thoughts. Thanks.

My brother has one for deer hunting, it’s a great gun and quite accurate. He’s never had any issues.

I shoot an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 20g, also very accurate.

Amazing how accurate sabot slugs really are, people don’t give them enough credit.

Bought one and it shoots great. Problem was my daughter used it so I had to buy another. Different brands of ammo shot differently. Shoots really tight groups at 100. Have not shot alot out farther. Pretty expensive shells. Shot 2 shells this year. One making sure it was on and another for a deer.

I would use rifle if allowed in my area but second best thing in my opinion.

I am pretty sure that is the slug gun my son bought when he lived in Montana and he loves that gun. Shot 2 Elk with it at 200 yards plus. Drop them both in their tracks.

A good friend of mine has one, as do most of my co-workers. They are incredibly accurate slug guns. Hearing of Stickers 200 yard shot is not a surprise to me at all.

I considered one when I began planning to hunt in MN 5 years ago. From my research it was the one of the best slug guns at a price I could stomach (really liked the Ithaca deerslayers but just couldn’t get over the pricetag). With WI loosening up the requirements in the muzzleloader season I opted to go with the CVA Accura muzzleloader though as it was a more versital option now for me.

Awesome gun. Remington accu tip slugs were made for this gun if I remember right. Tack driver at 200. I paired mine with a Nikon slug hunter BDC. The Accu tip slugs seem to perform best. Amazing IMO.

I have one. A utility gun for sure. Not real pretty. Fit/Finish is so-so IMO. Wouldn’t sell it for anything. Very accurate – that’s why you buy one. Buy a couple boxes of the shells Savage recommends – Accutips and Federal Trophy Coppers in both 2 3/4 and three inch and find out what your gun likes. Mine liked the Federals. My groups got a little wider with a hot barrel.

I echo the Accutip slugs. Tack driver.

One thing to be aware of – there can be issues with the ejector sticking and not ejecting shells. I’ve had the issue with mine a couple times. Once deer season is over, I’ll probably reach out to Savage on it.

Despite that issue, I don’t regret the gun at all and will probably buy another since my son is hunting with me now.

I just picked one up this fall and so far I’m very impressed. I paired mine up with a 1×4 muller speed shot that has the illuminated daylight visible red dot and I couldn’t be happier happier. The red dot on 1x is great for close encounters when I’m hunting thick cover and for deer on the move as it allows me to keep both eyes open for quick target acquisition. For deer that are out there a ways simply dial it up and squeeze. Gun is extremely accurate and mine loves the 3” accutips.

Savage has apparently made a modification to the action so shell ejection is no longer an issue on the new models.

    Any pros/cons on going with a 20gauge vs 12?

I only hunt deer so the 20 is plenty, plus less kick. When I researched it, it seemed the 20 might get a bit more accuracy but both seemed to be great guns. It your going to hunt larger animals you’d have to compare the ballistics on the 20 vs 12 and make your decision form there…

I have never shot this gun, but used to hunt with slugs a lot before wi changed to rifles. All I can add is I HATED the recoil on the slugs and never enjoyed shooting them. I also had a more bird style stock and heavy trigger, so maybe that contributed. I’ll also add that if you can use rifles you are going to get the accuracy of about a 30 30, so why pay the price of the slugs and also have to carry the massive boxes in your pocket. That gets old quickly

I don’t have the 220 but have the 212. Very accurate, but kind of heavy. Great sitting gun but not for walking. Recoil is much better than the 870!

My neighbor has one. Just last night, he was telling me about the deer he got with it this year. He loves it!

I love my 220! It’s very accurate beyond 100 yards. Pair it up with federal 3” sabot slugs. That’s my best results with this gun.

Absolutely love the 220 savage very accurate. Have had it for 4 years and have successfully harvested Bucks every year. Accuracy is simply amazing with this gun and plenty of energy to lay them down. I have had my best groupings shooting the Remington Premiere AccuTip 265 grain.

I bought this gun last year. I agree with everyone here that is a great and accurate slug gun. I have had an issue since day one loading the second and third shells. If anyone finds a fix or if savage ends up coming with a solution please let me know.

I love the accuracy of the gun. Mine has killed 7 deer with 7 shots. I also have the ejector problem. I might just start using it as a single shot. The shells seem to eject better without the magazine in it.

If I were to ever go back to a cartridge gun for a shotgun deer zone, this would be my choice. Of course I would also consider such a buy back-pedaling since I hunt with extremely accurate muzzle loaders and find that one shot gets things done nicely so I can assure Disco that going single is OK.

Savage 220 is a great slug gun. Use the Remington Accutip sabots for great accuracy at up to 200 yards. Remington ballistics suggest zero at 150, so a decent marksman should be in the kill zone at 200 if you shoot it enough.
I wouldn’t anything but my accutips for it. You need a good ballistic round to shoot that distance accurately.

Just picked up my 220 this morning. Any recommendations for a scope for it? Thanks.

My small deer camp(3) all have the 220. We have either 3-9 or 2-7 power scopes. I shot 4 different brands and both 2 3/4 and 3″ Hornady, Remington and Federal all shot into same 1-2 moa group at 100 yards. Hornady and Remington were more consistent, Winchester only one that grouped to a different poi(only about 1″ away). could interchange any of these out to 125 yards. for longer shots a rangefinder is required as the drop becomes greater, these are still shotgun slugs not rifles. I would limit shots to distance you have actually practiced at.
