Heading to BWCA Monday and thought I’d try salted minnows in addition to leeches this year; targeting walleyes.

    1. Anyone tried the “store bought” emerald shiners or fatheads from Cabala’s or FF?

    2. Willing to try to process a batch is someone has a good recipe to share.

    3. Thoughts re: shiners, fatheads, other species success and/or length of time they will stay on a jig?

    Thanks much.

I have done both Cabelas preserved and salted minnows. The salted minnow hands down worked better. Look on walleye central for salting recipe. OR call Vado’s bait in Spring Lake Park they sell fatheads by the gallon for salting. I have only salted fatheads have not tried any other species. We used them on jigs and bottom bouncers with good results, Just remember to package them in the amount you will use in a day and keep the rest frozen until needed. I can’t remember recipe. But it was searchable on wallye central

I prefer salting my own just because when I have ordered salted fatheads in the past, they were crappie minnow size. I can get live magnum fatheads locally and salt them myself
