Well after sharing a few pics with some friends of fish i have already got this year! many trout over 20″ a couple old timers were saying how they used to catch nice trout like that in the river running threw town! this is not a trout stream but with the rain today and limited time we thought what the heck its worth a try! I dont think we did too bad with the 3 trout we got on a new river we never would have thought had trout!

Nice work! It pays to explore. Looks like that big brown bag is a creel? Did you keep those big fish or let them go? Your choice obviously, however I just want to point out many non-designated streams are low numbers big fish streams. Keeping them they will not be there for you and your friends next time. When I harvest I harvest out of streams with high numbers and take those 10-14″ for the fryer or smoker.

Anyway either way, congratulations are in order. The 20″ brown and the 14″ brookie are trophy sized stream trout for this area. Amazing to catch a big brookie in non-designated!

scudly my bag I have on is a home made jober I made last year for a trip to Alaska grayling fishing! Just got some leather a leather punch and about hour later I had a good bag that has turned out to be the best trout fishing bag I have ever had! The best part is it didnt cost much at all!

It has also been very lucky!

not to mention that all non designated streams/rivers are catch and release only for trout.

Fanatic I do not believe this is true. If it is trout season you can keep them. Just cannot keep trout in a non-designated stream if trout season is closed.

I very well may keep a trophy out of the Vermillion if I get it in the non-designated area.

You can keep trout on any stream that a person has legal access to anytime the season is open, unless the stream is marked catch and release only. Trout stream info can be found at the following site. Kevin

That is correct. Vaughn Snook, Lanesboro Fisheries even confirmed this. Non-designated streams are going to be marginal. Not hold many trout but the few in there can be quality. Keeping trout from a low numbers stream is shooting yourself in the foot, IMO. I fish non-designated all the time and often catch the same fish over and over again.

Howver it is your legal right to keep trout in non-designated as long as it is within trout season AND you hold a trout stamp. I’d keep if the trout was not going to make it. I may also keep a trout of a lifetime for the wall. Just waiting for 24″ or larger. It is a tall order.

i guess i was under the impression that you couldnt. thought that was one of the things that changed when the new regs went into effect five or more years ago. i stand corrected.
