today was trout opener, the day i’ve been looking forward to all year. Not only does this mean i can fish for trout, but it also means that i can fish the vermillion river again for carp and white suckers.

so i met up with my friend today and he started catching tons of rainbows and lost a couple nice browns. things started off slow for me but picked up as the day went on. i ended the day with four rainbow trout and my first white sucker of the year, and my friend landed close to two dozen rainbows

here are a few pics from this outing

(the stuffed sturgeon is for another site)

Glad to hear you had a nice opener. Those larger browns that got away will haunt you and make you want to keep coming back. I love the Vermillion. I look forward to fishing it many evenings this summer. So are you having those rainbows for dinner tonight?

Since I cant get the walleyes to cooperate. Were heading out today. You were catching rainbows in the Vermillion? I didnt think there were any in there. Some huge browns though. My buddy caught a 23″ in downtown farmington a few years back. You can worm up a ton of suckers in there too. Any one been to belle? or gilbert? Ive caught some nice upper teens browns out of there but where we were was C&R.

Yeah they stock catchable rainbows and dump them out in Rambling River Park right in downtown Farmington. It is a family kid friendly tradition. Most are caught or don’t make it. However occasional holdovers and they can grow to be giants quickly if they avoid predators. Plenty of baitfish to munch on.

I have fished Belle a couple of times however it was when I primarily fly fished. I think it would be best to worm fish or spin fish in low light once you find the right pools. I think it is another low number big fish stream. It is C&R but bait is allowed which is the way it should be.

I fish Belle a lot since its so close to home. It is definatly a low number big trout stream. Ive seen multiple browns over 20″ out of it. The C&R part seems to be a good thing for the size of fish. I also catch them on small rapalas down there but mostly spinners. I grew up in Lakevile and fished the Vermillion a lot I cant believe we never hooked into a Rainbow. I always had better luck on the vermillion when it was raining or shortly after. Do you guys wear full camo when your trout fishing? We fished a small stream this weekend and it looked like if you spooked 1 fish walking up on pools you couldnt even get any to chase the bait after. This particular stream we caught some decent fish in the past but everything we caught or saw was tiny like 8″ or smaller. Back to the Vermillion crawfish colored crankbaits Any big trout Ive ever caught down there had crawfish in its belly.
