Heading to Newfoundland in June. Primary mission is a bear hunt, but secondary is trout/salmon. I don’t think we’ll hit the peak of th Atlantic run, but there might be some grilse (possibly some adult Atlantics?) and hopefully lots of brookies around.

    What tackle should I bring?

Thinking one spinning rod (any suggestions on lures??) and one fly rod (any suggestions on flys/patterns to tie or buy?) Which would be most appropriate… 5, 6, 7, or 8 weight rod?

    All help is appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Sounds like a great trip

Probably check websites that offer the fishing gigs and see if they have recommendations to give you with some tips. But I think if it were me I’d be taking My 7 and 8 wt fly rods. I think you’ll encounter windy conditions, and tossing big streamer flies or weighted nymphs, both which can be tough to cast with lighter weight rods even if the winds don’t whip up. If you have 9 footers, great, but I’d use nothing less than an 8 1/2 foot. In my 8 weight rod tube I can put two rods in it by putting the rod handles opposite each other in the tube, then you get to take both.

As far as flies, again check on local websites for the area or do tackle shop search for the area and see if they have stream reports and what’s working….otherwise, just cough up some $$ and buy when you get there. I seem to always buy some when I get to the location especially if I’m pumping them for the what and where information.

Have an awesome trip. I’m heading out to Idaho to either the Salmon River or Snake river country. Can’t wait!

I would pack a five weight flyrod and a light action spinning rod. Go after the Brookies!

That’s about what I’m thinking… I’m still waiting to hear from the outfitter (he’s out cutting firewood at the outposts) if Atlantics are going to be an option or if it will be all brookies. I assume mostly brookies.

Any suggestions for flies to tie/buy for the brookies?

    Thanks!

Not sure about flys up there but luckily brookies are not that picky. I see there are some rivers there with Sea Run Brook Trout. If those are in any of the rivers you fish then you might opt for a seven weight fly rod or a med action spinning rod, they run much bigger. Your outfitter will be your best resource.
