North Shore PINKS

For the first time CastandBlast and I went up to the North shore after the Pink salmon and hope to catch some bonus fish as well. We started at 4 in the morning and up to lester where the water was real low and no fish but casted spoons into the lake with no success. After a few places we managed to see some fish so we tried for a while and finnally got one pink. After another hour of frustration and learning we headed to another river NO PINKS in any other river we checked out. We talked to quite a few guys up there and no others fishing in all but one river. Discuraged a little we went back to where we saw the pinks and C&B went to the mouth while I tried for those pinks. First cast I hooked my first KING. Not huge but it was 7 lbs. The very next cast I hooked a pink, after the scrappy fish manged to soak C&Bit jumped up and threw the hook. This happened another 3 times before I was able to land one my first pink. I ended up losing many more but managed my limit and headed back home a little after sundown. Got home a little before midnight making for a long day. Lots of fun and shows with a little luck and lots of determination I(with the help of C&B) added 2 more spiecies to my list.

I have a list of freshwater fish that I keep track of with photos and am up to 37!

    Nice salmon.

Splitrock river by chance? Our trip north to the cabin is a week late this year. Past years have found me down on the Splitrock River doing the pinks. They are fun to catch. There are a couple other rivers with spotty runs too.

I bet that king was a nice bonus. I too was up chasing pinks this weekend. Ran into some in each of the mid-shore rivers. I heard the larger runs were taking place north east of Grand Marais. I never got that far up the shore. The only king I saw was in the French sancuary. I was also pleasantly surprised by the number of coasters. They appear to be making a comeback, which is great since they were almost completely wiped out. Please remember to immediately release all brook trout (coasters) caught below the barrier falls. These spawning fish are vital to the recovery efforts. I also caught a few bonus smallies, although no size to any of them. All fish were caught on various beadheads drifted with an occaisional twitch. Once the sun was up the fish became pretty line shy so I had to switch to a three pound tippet. I did lose a few in the rocks but if you can steer them clear of the rocks it is amazing the battles you can have with 3lb test.

The river picture shows the type of water the pinks and coasters were holding in. I also included a picture of an otter that was feasting on the salmon.

Accually I can’t remember which river that was we stopped by soo many I don’t remember what river was the one but we didn’t go north of Grand Morais. It was only a day trip and I was so beat I am still recovering.

    I like the pics too!

Looks as though you had more variety on your fishing. The King was a great bonus we also caught some brookies above and below the barriers.

An even better bonus is the smoker I ordered on Tuesday came on Friday so I am going to break it in with my salmon!

What day were you up there? I saw pinks in 7 different rivers. It was nothing like it will be during the peak of the run, but they had definately started on Friday and Saturday.

    Friday
What rivers did you got to.
PM me if you don’t want it on public please

We hit all the major known rivers from lester on up to I think the cascade.

I was thinking we were one day early but it was nice that we had it all to ourselves.
