Spent a day on our favorite Wisconsin Spring Creek on Saturday with Tegg. This was our first time out for the season. The season opened last weekend but 0 degree highs and iced up rivers prevented us from going.
Had a wonderful time and the fishing didn’t disappoint either. Iced up fly rods and cold fingers were a common occurrence throughout the day for us. We also needed snowshoes to get from our vehicle to the river itself with ~20″ of snow left in the woods. Once on the river, we were also limited to walking the river only instead of taking any shortcuts through the woods.
It took us a while to find the wintering holes that had active fish; once we did the fishing was pretty good. Long fluorocarbon leaders or light mono leaders were also important in the low/clear water. Our top flies were pink squirrels and pheasant tails; both in sizes 14 through 18.
