Hello fellow fisherman! This is one of my first posts on here so if it’s not in the right section let me know. I have never fished Lake Superior either summer or winter and I’m looking to get on the ice out there for some lake trout fishin or white fish angling. Any suggestions on where to go or what to look for? I haven’t the slightest idea on how to fish superior so any help is appreciated. Also, if anyone has the Navionics app for their smart phone could they let me know if it shows depths for Lake Superior as well? I’m thinking about buying it and that would really seal the deal for me.
    Thanks!

Maybe post this in the Lake Superior forum. Click on the Minnesota State forum, then Lake Superior.

I spend a lot of time on the shores up there in the Two Harbors area during to spring, summer, and fall. In the boat the charting is in the locator. The ice is NEVER a safe venture on Superior. The shipping harbor in Duluth offers some angling and then the Bayfield/Appleton areas of Wisconsin ice up too. The inner harbor at Two Harbors will freeze and is probably walkable right now, but keep in mind that a good blow from the right direction can erase some amazingly thick ice in a couple hours. I won’t suggest that anyone go on Superior’s ice unless they make some trips with very experienced persons who know the little things to watch for.

There aren’t any lakers or trout in the Harbor here in the Duluth, well there might be one or two…Thats walleyes, pike, perch, sturgeon…Off of 21st ave E here in Duluth freezes over and people fish out there for lakers, coho and such…As Tom said you have to be real careful out there, I plan on trying out there this year if I can find someone who is experienced with out there…I can let ya know when its fishable if you’d like…

The safest place to ice fish Lake Superior and ITs still not the safest between St Ignace Island and the mainland by Schreiber. Ontario. The guy at Gravel River Motel used to rent shacks on the bay for jigging whitefish,Lakers,Steelhead, specks and pike. A little closer there is some Ice fishing done in Thunder Bay and Nipigon. The Island creates Nipigon Bay.Black Bay also has some shack rentals. On the US side as other have said inside Duluth harbor and inside Apostle Islands and Chequmagon bay are about it.

If you could that would be great! I live in Pike Lake actually and have heard about the reliability of superior ice.

    Hey JigginIT,

Your best bet is going out on Chequamegon bay in the Washburn/Bayfield area.

And yes the Navionics App does show charts, but its not great. Its an awesome tool for a general view and great for trolling. Tells you speed, direction, etc, and is pretty darn accurate.

If you have any questions shoot me a PM. Be glad to share some tips.
