Cheap Fly Reel?

I’m posting this in this section as I think it will get the most views. I’m looking to upgrade my fly reel. I use it for panfish mostly, very seldom some stream stocked bows, and I want to try targeting white bass with it this summer.

I’m looking for a cheap, but good, fly reel with a disc drag and silent retrieve! The one I have now is an el cheapo with NO drag, just a clicker and it is very annoying. I hooked a 14-15″ bass with it last year and it was a mess. Never seen anyone get a backlash on a fly reel before until that day. I don’t want to spend a ton of money on this, I use it a handful of times a year… but I am starting to get a little more serious about it, so I may upgrade to a good rod and reel later this year. I just need something cheap to get me by until then.

    Rod is an 8′ 4/5
    Line is WF4

    Thank you for any help!

I have one of these reels in the 9/10 size. The drag is very smooth, very nice.

Okuma SLV. Not a current model but plenty on ebay. Smooth, silent.

I caught my scottish salmon on this reel in a 10, but I have smaller ones too.

It’s a decent reel, I have my 9/10 on a 5 weight Switch rod. It’s solid and reliable. I wouldn’t want to drop it though. The trade off with these reels is that they are made “thin” to reduce the weight, so if it rolls off the table it might get bent. Normal wear-and-tear is no problem.

I use a windriver Cabelas reel for $19.95. Works great I have landed many steelhead with it.

X2 on the Okuma. My reel I use on my 8 weight has taken on pike up to 47 1/2 inches, bass, and even a catfish. This reel works very well and is easy to take care of and upkeep. Would work very well for you IMHO.
