So I live in the Twin Cities. I want to learn to fly fish for trout in a stream that isn’t too far away. Where should I go? Please give me some ideas. I only catch and release and oh take pictures so they will be in there for everyone else

SW Wisconsin has some of the prettiest and healthiest streams around. Plenty of public access points and many will grant permission to their property if approached with respect. I don’t know MN for trout streams, so I really don’t know what is closest to you. Look up LenH ‘s posts. He keeps the trout stream forum up with plenty of awesome pics! I have a farm just minutes away from some of Len’s spots. Absolutely beautiful out here.

Western WI has some dynamite trout streams…specifically the Rush River and Kinnikinnic River. The Kinni is in River Falls, so not too far. The Rush is only a few minutes farther in Martell and south. The Kinni is a great stream to wet your hand with a fly rod…plenty of action.

I second the Kinni. I drive over the river everyday on my way to classes at UWRF. I have seen two different anglers out casting the shore underneath the bridge when you first come into town. I have also seen some trout swimming in the streams, so they are in fact in there

Within an hour’s drive Wisconsin offers easier to access streams, with decent numbers of fish. However MN also has some good water, its just harder to find and fish. The red wing area in particular offers streams with easy access and good fish, and they tend to be less crowded than the more popular Wisconsin rivers. So my advice is fish both states, try lots of different streams, and with a bit of work you’ll be rewarded with plenty of good fishing. I can’t give out to many specific spots, but try Hay creek in the hay creek day unit of the Richard J. Doer Memorial Forest. Its real close to Red Wing, is all public land, and has decent numbers of fish.
