Salmon is one of my favorite foods. I do not want to undercut any guides working through this site so by all means recommend some good ones! I am familiar with leadcore, snapweights, and familiar with mini disks etc, but I would love to make a trip to the closest area to rochester that has solid salmon fishing this summer. Can I do it with the gear I have mentioned or do I need downriggers? What are some options for a retreat with a nice atmosphere, lodging, fishing etc…. Thank you for any heads ups salmon people!!!!!

Just about any port on the WI side of Lake Michigan has fishing available with your equipment. Allot will depend on when, wind and water temps. You will not get real deep with with what you have so you need to find the right temp water for what depth your equipment can get you too. Leadcore is often our most lethal rod on the boat. Mix in a couple of yellowbirds/planer boards and you’re in business. You could try to rig a 3 way with a 1 lb ball to get 1 line deep- pretty simple to rig but it does take some of the fight out of the fish. Usually our riggers are not the most active rods but I think they are the attractors for the fish to come into our spread.

You can troll if you want…but I have caught lots n lots of them just casting…

You only need a med action 7-9′ rod and reel that hold 300 yds of 20# braid…some flashy inline spinners, max raps, spoons, jig/plastics etc… Those salmon come right into the Wisc harbors in June/July and are caught just by casting.

Look up the Holst/Haatja video from Milwaukee Harbor and get pumped up!

dont ask me Y these work so well but we started out years ago fishing June and then another trip in September with Nikkie boy charters these flies were all we used in June never had a trip in June with him that we ever got all the poles in the water! as far as September we never used them at all it was spoons and plugs!

seemed silver blue and green were always good colors!

always got the most fish on the ones closet to or skipping on the surface in June! mostly coho and some trout the kings for the most part always came on the deeper rods!

If ya head out that way and need another guy to tag along?

i have boards, and i have handline weights to rig one deep- Tommy- that vid was in september- think that pattern holds in june july? Would like to take my father in law so trolling may be best option- I blew out his shoulder making him fish muskies with me a couple years ago- Thanks for all responses- i should videotape my bootleg set up if I rock out with all my walleye gear!

Its a large fly that is similar to a trout fly but the salmon flies are much larger.

We go in August and launch our boat out of Two Rivers. Motels are cheap too.

Flasher/Fly’s is what works the best year in and year out.
Spoons are also huge at times. Certainly in late June & early July, I would plan on running flasher/fly comobo’s and/or an assortment of spoons.

If you don’t have down riggers, you should at the very least have a dipsy/diver rod setup and ready to run at all times.

You can get lead core down deeper if necessary by running torpedo divers on them as well. There not hard to use and are a cheap alternative when you don’t have downriggers or dipsy divers.
