Fished one of our favorite Western Wisconsin trout streams for the early season opener. The high and dirty water caused us to chage tactics slightly to match the water conditions…Instead of traditional fly fishing (nymphs and emergers) we used streamers and minow imitation slash baits.
The pattern was dead on as we had great success and caught lots and fish and even lots of big fish up to 18″. Caught mostly browns but did catch some very nice brook trout.
Saturday was the better day with the higher water and cloudy conditions. The higher water brought out the bigger fish as we caught very few under 12″ and most were in the 15″ to 18″ range. Today, while still pretty good, was not as productive as Sunday. My friend, ie. The Famous Grouse, did catch his PB brown at 18″. Just as fun watching other people catch fish as it is catching one yourself.
