Getting set up for great lakes fishing and now that I have a few reels to play with I’m wondering how much line is a good start.

I read anywhere from 150 yards to as much as the reel will hold, any suggestions?

Some of the reels I have will hold over 300 yards, so filling may get spendy, but if that’s what it takes to keep from getting spooled, so be it.

I’ve only had one fish go over 300 yards (approaching 400 yds), so i put 400-500 yards on mine. Can’t use it if its not there.

Now you see why i’ve shifted to Penn 10s and Ripcord as a standard!!

FILL em 300 yards is a good number- we have had salmon run 600 ft off a line counter- I have only been spooled once but been close several times.
Some of this depends on size of rod/reel your running but for salmon 300 yards of anything is a good place to start. Good line is worth every penny! they will be rubbing in releases and crossing and tangling (maybe that just happens to me allot)all the time.
PS the one time we did get spooled we ended up chasing down the fish but managed to tangle just about all 9 lines we had in the water at the time with the quick turn around chase down. It was fun- sorta

Thanks guys, looks like so far I’ll go with 300 or more.

I could see with a lot of lines out and a big fish it getting a little exciting.
