Saints Punter Thomas Morstead is an Awesome and Tough Guy

This story is cool as hell.

For those that don’t know or don’t want to follow the link to the story:

Many of you probably saw Saints Punter Thomas Morstead go after and tackle Marcus Sherels early in the game and come up hurt. He had torn cartilage in his ribs and was noticeably in pain all game, but toughed it out.

Obviously the game ended the way it did and the Vikings were required to do an extra point attempt when most of the teams had cleared off the field. Morstead was the first Saint to come back out and line up for the meaningless play. One Vikings fan was so impressed that he looked Morstead up and posted a link to the Punter’s charity and Vikings fans have donated over $71,000 to it. The link I provided doesn’t cover the next part very well, but from what I saw on the news Morstead is pretty moved by the generosity and thinks the money should stay in Minnesota so he’s donating it to the Minnesota Children’s Hospital. He says if it gets to $100,000 he’ll fly here Super Bowl weekend to present the check himself.

Also, I caught Morstead on Barrerio’s show on KFAN today and he seems like one tough but really thoughtful guy. He said if a specialist (like a punter) gets hurt it’s typically a leg injury that takes the player out and they don’t get the chance very often to play hurt and he saw it as a challenge, and he has a ton of respect for the position players that do it all the time.

Some Vikings players have even said that, knowing Morstead was hurt, they were impressed to see him be the first one to jog back on the field and line up for the extra point.

The guy seemed genuinely moved by all the donations and wants to make sure to do something positive and carry a positive message. A really good story if you ask me.

Kudos to the fans! They’re the ones making donations.

A kicker who has a 6yr $22 mill contract, $3.5 mill signing bonus and plays through some pain isn’t gonna get kudos from me. Many do that here I’m sure everyday for alot less money. He’s gonna fly back to present a check he didn’t write himself, how thoughtful of em. tongue

His tackle last game was pretty sweet though.

I heard an interview with one of the vikes offensive lineman who said after all that, when morstead came to the line of scrimmage he simply said “sup fellas?” or something along those lines to the MN players, and they all kinda cracked up. Seems like a good dude.

And definitely kudos to the fans donating. Doing our state proud.

Heard this on kfan, too. I think it was Sirles who said it.

Nhamm, I get what you’re saying but the guys doing a good thing and my bet is he throws in some of his own money. Lotta people out there with a load of coin that don’t do anything to help others. At least he (and the people that contributed) are doing some good.

I heard the same thing on KFAN, the story sounded hilarous.

Very cool on his part and the fans that donated. Sounds like a stand up guy to me, don’t know why someone would rip him for it. So, he makes a lot of money to play football. If it’s so easy go do it yourself. Why so negative???? whistling

    Who’s ripping him?

I’m just not gonna sit here and think these guys are saints or anything, pun intended doah

Interesting how not long after all the NFL scandals and abuse charges the public relations machine goes buckwild and every lil charity these guys are in gets publicized to the 10th power on our TVs.

My negative feelings do rise with a beef from NFL, not the kicker dude here. Just find it all suspicious as usual and want the credit to the powerful fanbase appreciated more than a kicker who lit up our returner.

I need to go fishing for my sanity smash

Perhaps because the media and people in general are so quick to be critical and point out the faults of people rather than the good that happens.
I don’t care how much money he makes, he is doing a good thing, sounds like a great guy and being hurt, he certainly could have just went to the ice bath instead of being the first one to line up, at D tackle no less, for the last meaningless play.
Everyone is so quick the judge the NFL and its players for their faults, but sit on their collective hands when good things happen.

For every good action there is an equal and opposite Nhamm reaction. )

I still can’t believe they made them kick an extra point. FFS. That rule needs to be changed…although a few Vegas “Captains” may not let them.

There are a lot of betters that can thank the Vikings because they kneeled instead of kicking an extra point and beating the spread (5). Hmmm LOL

Admittedly, but I don’t watch any football, but what is the punter doing on the defensive PAT team? I thought punters only punted and held the ball on kicks.

    Either way, good for him.

The rest of the team had already made their way to the locker room to pout. This guy stayed out, or at least was the first person to come out and finish the game.

Class act all the way if you ask me.

I understand what nhamm is saying and I agree on some level here.
This year the league decided to honor one player from each team for their charity work well in good I suppose. I find it odd that at the beginning of the games they announce the players but no mention of what charity. To me this smells that of a publicity stunt.
The league adopted the idea of players finding a cause and supporting that cause after Denny Green started the idea. Again well and good, and there realy was no advertisement of adopting this idea, but now they seem to be exploiting this good will to there advantage. Its big business and anything that promotes the brand is the norm.

Aside from the fact its big buisiness, I try to remind myself its a
great thing these players and the league are doing. Also I have to put out of my head these poeple that do these charities have money and it really does not matter as of a society we all have to give what we can when we can do so and not rely on those that have money.

Sorry not meant to be sermon of the day just a few thoughts that got blurted out.

That’s the Walter Payton Man of the year award.. they have been doing it for decades… one player from each team is nominated by their own teammates. They do mention what they do for their charity off field… the few I seen anyways.

Has anyone here yet thought that this was a NFL ploy to gather the fan base? Suck up too the media and the sheep that follow this hype?

Lets all believe this is not entertainment, for a multi billionaire corporation to try and gain some credibility. Ya, I know party pooper. hah
