RV Trailer Tabs – Is it law to update them every year?

I have an RV parked at a resort on Mille Lacs. It never moves, it’s just parked there on private resort property. Am I required to renew my tabs on it every year if it never goes on the road?

A good friend of mine with a trailer right next to me just got a property tax notice on his trailer/shed/deck, we believe because he wasn’t updating the tabs. My quick thought is that this seems like Aitkin County double dipping (resort is already paying property tax)….but curious if anyone knows the legalities of this.

    Really interesting question.

I would call the county assessor and get the whole story.

I strongly suspect you’re right, however. I bet Aitkin county found a new source of revenue and that if the RV isn’t licensed to go on the road, then it’s a dwelling, not a vehicle.

I’ll be interested to know what the full story is here.

I have a camper on a site in McGregor and if you don’t put tabs on your camper you get property tax on it. You also pay property tax on sheds and decks.

No on the trailer tabs. Even if the county says you need them. Went through this. State DMV says no as long as it never goes on a road. Aitken county has a DECK TAX believe it or not. This DOES need to be paid. You can ditch the deck or make it small enough – under their specs and not elevated off the ground. Not sure exactly the size. My old deck made a dam nice bonfire after they tried that one on me.

Note – that lame law was enacted in the last year I was an RV camper at Wilderness. Aitken county is making it tough for resort to cater to RV campers these day.

Also, be careful about what you burn in your fire pit if you have one. Those inspectors will poke around in the pit when you are not around looking for evidence you burned something other than wood. They see anything that resemble garbage, they will be mailing you and possibly the resort a ticket.

Glad I have my own place in Mille Lacs county now.

    Good luck.

They inspect for tabs on my seasonal trailer in Northern St. Louis county. They also did when I had the trailer in Kanabec county.

I know some cities have ordinances that say vehicles parked on properties have to have current registration. Not sure is any townships would.

When we had our seasonal in kandyohi county we where told they needed to be licensed and up to date. Owners told us it otherwise would be considered like a mobile home park!

I was told by the resort that the trailer tabs have to be kept up to date or you get property tax. I just bought a trailer and replaced my 25 year old fish house. In fact I just build a deck on it this last weekend. It’s big and it’s high so I hope I don’t get nailed with that:???: We are in Mille Lacs county and none of our neighbors have had a deck tax that I know of…
