I’ve got a well used heater that has some rust on the cage, heat shield, etc. When the time comes I’ll buy a new one, but was wondering if there’s anything I could do to slow it down a little? Normally I would grease or oil a tool to slow it down, but with a heater I obviously don’t want to start a fire. It is a sunflower type.

Remove rust with sandpaper or like abrasive.
Treat lightly with any oil or rust prohibitor for storage.

Steel wool and break cleaner. Let dry before use or wd 40 also works. Let dry again and you will be just fine

Clean rust with steel and fine sandpaper. Purchase some high temp engine spray paint and repaint. Paint can be found at stores like Fleet or Runnings.
