Taking the family to Country Camping near Isanti on the Rum River this weekend.
We have a campsite right on the river. Has anyone had any luck fishing at or around there?
My son and I will bring our rods regardless but curious if there’s anything swimming in the river besides me floating down the river in a tube.

The river is really low right now. You will have better luck around any deeper holes if you have some near your camp site. Bring a bucket of crawlers and you should catch something.

My go to is a spinner rig with a worm. You’ll catch smallies, walleyes, and lots of suckers. Find the deep holes

Is the water level that low in Isanti? I fish the Rum further north than that and its been at normal levels, if not higher, all season so far. I primarily use a 1-2 punch of a topwater and then a plastic as a follow up for when fish swipe and miss the topwater. But also realize I am floating it, not stationary.

Put in @ Walbo and float to Cambridge. Lots of good water in between. I would not fish the Rum south of Cambridge.

Just curious as to why you would not?

Kind of sucks, shallow. But there is some good deep holes and decent spots. Walbo to Cambridge has some damn good coverage.

Yeah I have fished it, we have put in at Anoka Fair grounds and gone up river quite a ways, it can get really shallow but there are fish in that area. Did bang the prop a couple times.

The DNR has a flow gauge in St Francis and right now the level is listed as scrapable so ya I’m sure there would be a fair amount of dinged props through that area. A canoe, kayak, jon boat, or other shallow drafting watercraft would probably have to be used until water levels come back up.

Do a float from Walbo to Isanti. You will find out why. Mostly stems from the literal crap from Cambridge that used to flow into the Rum up to the mid 70’s. Plus the water gets shallow. Good for trash fish, not much more.

Tim, you might have to walk your boat up a sandbar just north of Cambridge. After that you should be good. Watch for logs and rocks tho. I haven’t run that stretch in a prop boat in a few years.

Tim I boat that stretch every few weeks. At the current water level that would be a long trip in a prop boat along with plenty of logs to navigate and several stretches of rock. Walbo to Cambridge is about 15 miles by water.

I know it is a little late but if you can walk upriver towards the rope swing in the morning or down by their landing there is some deeper water. Most of the river infront on the sites is well under 2 ‘ right know I wouldn’t be surprised if it is under a 1’.

I was on the Rum yesterday further north. It’s getting low. We bumped some rocks and bottomed out on a couple shallow riffles. My Jon boat can float through 2 inches of water too.

Not going 15 miles, would I be better starting at Walbo? My Jon drafts pretty shallow and getting out to pull over a shallow spot is fine. Would feel better about motoring upstream——–Thanks

dbright- We ended up just throwing a few lines right in front of our campsite. Mostly just for the kids. They all caught fish though. Mostly suckers and a few tiny smallmouth bass. Water was about 2-3ft.
