I use tape also but not the plain black tape. That leaves a sticky residue on the handle. I tried the bands and hated them. doah

Lost a nice fish tonight at the hole due to the sweet bands, then in the cluster f , I must of hit the anti reverse switch. Another hookset and lost fish . Dumbest design in ice fishing .

I like using the silicone repair tape. Haven’t had any issues with it coming loose or leaving residue on the handle after removal.

Use 3m 35 vinyl tape. I like the yellow or the red. Stretch the tape when putting on but not the last inch or so because it will want to retract over time. If you have a cork rod handle is the only time I would put tape down first before securing. Myself I would never use masking tape..way too much goo. 3 M 35 won’t leave the residue like cheap tape.

The silicon repair tape is by far the best option. Holds it tight and no residue.

Put on one wrap of narrow masking tape then put electrical tape over that. Works perfectly and leaves no residue on rod handles.
Do it like in this video. You’ll like it!

Whoops…just saw someone already posting this video!

Another vote for the silicon tape. Also cheaper and can do more reels than the stuff marketed for reels.

The bands indent the cork and can split the cork rings, Also when fighting a big fish the front of the reel comes off the handle and feels like its falling off.

Just had this happen for the first time. I thought the reel was just gonna leave, so I grabbed it all clumsy like. Another 2 seconds later and the big fish was gone. Stupid bands.

3M Silicon tape is the best solution I have found. It’s very strong, feels grippy on your hands even when wet, and leaves no residue behind and doesn’t pull up any cork bits because it is not an actual adhesive. If you’re going to use electical tape, put a single layer of blue painters tape down first to protect your cork.

$100 “custom” ice rod that doesn’t have a reel seat. I’d like to see that trend go away.

Never had a problem until this thread started. Bands loose on a rod this afternoon frown Going to tape.

Most of my rods have conventional reel holders. They have no less sensitivity than the higher end rods that rely on bands or tape.

I have always used 3M filament tape. I like that most of my current ice rods have rod seats though.

I’ve used the self bonding repair tape from Menards for years without any problems. Gardner Bender brand, good price and will mount several reels.

I hope you didn’t put them on you’re own body parts.

The bands jus don’t feel good.
