Would be nice to keep the axe another year.

That’s definitely possible again this year, Wisco is marginal at best and got handled by Iowa’s defense. I posted that about Floyd and the Axe both being in Dinkytown for the first time since 1993 for some perspective. I know many here don’t care, and will never like Fleck, however for anyone that’s been paying attention for the last 30+ years he’s doing a lot of things that haven’t been done in decades.

Unless you are 80+ years old, you have never seen a stretch of Gopher football this good. That doesn’t mean it is great football or they will become Alabama, or even Wisconsin in the 90’s/early 00’s, but for MN Gopher football it’s pretty dang good. And you have to walk before you run.

Now they need to get some big money going on the NIL side if they want to keep up, so it’s time for the boosters, businesses and Fortune 500 corporations to step up.

I dont remember if I mentioned this before but DinkytownAthletes is in charge of the NIL stuff for the U. I dont know all the places that are contributing, but I know Gray Duck Spirits and Brewing is. I bought 2 12 packs of the Duck Duck Beer a couple weeks ago and its actually quite good. You’re right with all these fortune 500 companies you would think they would kick in something.

Not sure if anyone posted but this happen to Iowa in 1987 pretty close to same thing and was called back in that game. It was a kick off returned but the illegal single brought it back. Couldn’t attach the video.

Good on Grey Duck for helping out but that’s literally hundreds of dollars which ain’t going to get you far in the NIL world.

Youre right, but its a start. I saw something on Twitter with a link that you could donate $35 directly to the NIL funding, but I cannot find it now.

Its happened quite a bit. It happened to the Gophers against Eastern Michigan the only difference is they blew the play dead immediately which is what they should have done here.

Yeah, they need Summit and Schell’s to donate a portion of every beer sold within the state of MN to really get going. But I think Summit has more St. Thomas ties than the U, could be wrong. And really any one of UHG/Target/Cargill/Ecolab/3M/Best Buy/General Mills/Land O Lakes could write a big check that would change the entire dynamic at the U, or they all could and the U would be the premier athletic University within a year or two. Really too bad they didn’t name TCF/HUntington Bank Stadium, Sanford Stadium or this convo wouldn’t even need to take place.

Tyreek Hill recently weighed in on the MN / IA punt return. He took the Gophers side saying once you call Peter or Poison it’s a dead ball and every return specialist knows this. And he should know a little something about punt returning in college.

Gophers to face Michigan St today…

Maroon & Gold are the school colors. I am not a fan of the universal black unis.

But Coyle and PJ think colored uniforms are cool and will draw “elite” players. News flash, a exciting offense and wins draw “elite” players.

    2 fumbles on the 1st 2 drives?
Terrible start but to only by down 6 zip is very fortunate.

Big Boy football on CBS. Georgia vs Florida. Seems that Mertz kid that transferred out of Wisconsin is pretty good.

You certainly can but Georgia is putting a whooping on them.

I think the overall yardage at the half is about 90 yards to 275 in favor of the boat rowers.

The Gophers finally finally found a little offense. Up 17-6.

Man you just can’t have anything nice in MN Sports. And I mean nothing.

Gophers have the game all but over and then give up an 80 yard TD drive in about 30 seconds to a back up QB. You just can’t make this sh/t up.

Except that it happens every year, in every sport.

To be fair I’m sure the weather played a part. coffee Can we dial back a few pages and see how everybody thought this was going to be a good team that would be in the West division battle to the very end.

Tonight on CBS it’s Bama vs LSU.

Kaliakmanis might just be the worst QB I’ve seen at MN.

And there were some on this thread saying he was good…LOL..

Lets not be to hard on PJ, he after-all will likely get into a bowl where he will pound somebody like Charlston State. The narrative will be all the extra precise time and exposure will produce a stronger team next year. Well at least thats the narrative we’ve heard the last 12 years.

To be fair the Iowa kid might have been a worse quarterback although he beat Northwestern yesterday who beat PJ earlier this year.

Actually PJ can recruit, problem is, he can’t coach with a lead. Champions keep trying to score and play D… typical Mn fashion, we play beat the clock and lose too many times. You think Harbaugh takes his foot off the gas ? Pretty sad effort again.

He’s got the talent to be good and has shown it for stretches, but lacks consistency for sure. He was the 3 highest graded QB this past week in college football.

I read this after the Gopher loss and I think it nails it:

Saturday loss encapsulated the PJ-Fleck era in 60 minutes

If you have been in a coma since 2016 and just woke up, Saturday’s loss to Illinois encapsulated everything that has happened since P.J. Fleck became head coach of the Gophers. This will not be an article bashing Fleck and calling for his job, but his entire program is built on catchphrases, one of which is “change your best.” He has taken the Minnesota football program to places it has never been, but watching the Big Ten West slowly slip away for the third straight season, it’s time for Fleck to change his best. Since 2019, he has consistently put this program in a position to do something special, but they’ve consistently been one step short, much like Saturday’s loss to Illinois.

The Gophers needed one first down to win the game. Instead they punt.

I get it you pin them back on their 10 yard line or whatever against a backup QB, very little time, statistics are on your side, again I get it.

But it simply inexcusable to lose that game. It was probably very close to the college version of the Minneapolis Miracle, in reverse.

Just stunning to lose that game. Man, I haven’t been that pissed-off after a sports game in quite awhile, lol.

That loss definitely hurt, so many ups and downs throughout the game. I thought Athan played well most of the game, but that last 3rd down dump to the TE was inexcusable. PJ has been getting criticized for passing there, but I thought it was a great play call with terrible execution, that routine throw should have ended the game.

Another year of mediocrity, can’t say I am surprised, but I am disappointed.

My only saving grace was.. I was “watching” the game on ESPN Gamecast in my deerstand… without seeing a play, I could almost see the ending unfolding in MN fashion. Run, run, run/throw, punt. Prevent “D” to prevent us from the win.
