Spearing Suckers Question

I may have asked this same question at the same time last year (sorry).

As a child I recall spearing suckers for the smoker and fish cakes. This took place on the streams up North. Is there such a thing near Rochester, MN? I ask because doesn’t the season start May 1st? If so, I bet with our warmer climate down here the sucker run may have already taken place?… prior to opener.?…

    Thanks

Just a thought, but aren’t a lot of the streams down by Rochester designated trout streams? I don’t think you can spear or net in those..

I could be way off base here.

I think that’s right, no spearing in d. trouts streams, but they all can’t be trout streams..?. I am hoping for a positive reply but in the back of my head I have my doubts.

The DNR has a list of designated trout streams on their website, so you can check that out. I think there are sucker runs during the legal season, though I have only gone once, and that was a lot further north. We missed the big run by one week apparently.

The Zumbro has a good sucker run.

Get a mn road atlas and head out on a sunny day checking the creeks and small streams going into and out of the lakes. Many of these have bridges, culverts and what ever going over them. Bet it wouldnt take long to find some sucker fishing or spearing spots. Doesnt take much of a creek for suckers to run in. The one we used to spear as kids was on average about 5′ across.

    Fun times.
