Have you ever caught a species that is yet to have a scientific name? The thought is kind of exciting to discover a new species that nobody has yet to identify.
Well, when I was fishing with Francois I caught the following fish. At first I thought it was the common Java Barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) but after further observation I felt it just looked too different. The tail seemed to much taller and the fish seemed to have a longer profile than the real Java Barb.
I showed Francois the differences and he took some photos for some experts in the field to further identify. The word he got back was that it is either a new species or a hybrid. The locals have a specific name for this fish which tells me that this fish is common enough to not be a hybrid. Anyway, the scientists need a specimen to know for sure and so Francois is trying to capture another one from that water we fished in last together.
The following is for sure a Java Barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) which is a very common species here.
