Tinfoil Barb & more

I had a great time on the water this morning. I went to my local river and connected on a good variety of species; 2 pb and 2 new lifers.

I started out with this nice Sicklefin Barb. This specimen could be the official IGFA World Record if I cared enough to send an application with $40 in. It’s only my name in a book and I don’t have an extra $40 so no big deal. It’s a nice fish though and a pb.

The 2nd pb was this nice Elephant Ear Gourami.

I have been hoping to catch a Tinfoil Barb for some time now and wouldn’t you know it; I caught 3 of them today. There are 2 Tinfoil Barb species. This one is the Redfin Tinfoil Barb. New lifer # 1 for the day.

New lifer #2 for the day is this Asiatic Minnow. They kind of remind me of our shad species. I caught several of them on ant eggs.

Dude, that’s some cool stuff. I’ve actually come to look forward to your posts kinda like I looked forward to the new Reader’s Digest arriving every month when I was a kid…

I love your posts. Forgive me for asking, as I’m sure you’ve spoken to this before – but what landed you in Laos?

deerdragger, he’s there for his job… but I’ll let him fill in the rest. It’s some sort of good-works outfit, but I’d actually like to know more myself.

It sounds like a cool gig…

There are several NGOs (Non Gov. Org.) here in Laos that help out with relief and development of this poor country since Laos is one of the poorest. There are organizations like World Vision, Save the Children, etc., etc., etc. I happen to be with the Assemblies of God and we help out with 10 kindergarten schools in Xieng Khoung, also community development projects in Savannakhet and Luang Prabang like bringing running water and toilets into villages for the first time or water filter systems for clean drinking water. There are other things I involve myself with here but that is about the just of it. I have a 3 year term here which will end next year. I miss home but I love my job and take advantage of what I get to experience while living here. You could say it is a pretty good gig but it has its ups and downs like everything else.
