Snagged this guy in the face while fishing the Mississippi early this morning. The eyes were snapping as well. Hate to sound like a novice here but I don’t even know what this is. Rough fish aren’t usually my target but like I said I snagged ’em. Help?

Is that the same as a bighead carp? I don’t know, because I don’t pay attention to them. But I’m taking a stab at it.

Nope, not the same, two different species altogether. Buffalo are a native species. I think they are pretty cool.

TO be specific it is a Bigmouth Buffalo.

Like stated before it is a native fish and nowhere near being related to any carp.

Does anyone know why the MNDNR regs state that any carp or buffalo caught while netting may not be returned to the water?

    P. 61 of MN Regs states “• A person may not release carp or buffalo taken by netting back into the
    water.”

By netting they are reffering to commercial netting not a landing net. THey really need to restate that.

    That is a Bigmouth Buffalo.

I, for the life of me, cannot figure out what is wrong with releasing a native Buffalo fish back to the same waters it has been swimming in for thousands of years. It just goes to show how backwards our DNR actually is. Unless there is something I am not understanding about that law, it sounds stupid to me. Buffalo fish are an important part of those ecosystems and they are a blast to catch too.

There are some of us who actually target Buffalos specifically when fishing.
