I just found out what a hair rig is, and I am very excited. can anybody tell me their experience with hair rigs. I want to know if they really work like they claim. I know there are so many hair rigs out there. I want to try them this spring.

Assuming you are talking about the hair jigs? If so These are a great place to start.

Many different ways to present these great baits but in most cases being subtle and not over working the bait is key. Great for vertical drifting and casting to structure.

You can tip these jigs with live bait at times but generally you don’t need to.

    Good luck

I first became aware of a hair jig was in the early 60’s. I was crappie fishing a watch a single guy working 2 rods as fast as he could. He simply placed the jig at a certain depth and reeled back into a small chop on the water to create an up and down movement and forward movement. It was a small lead jig head painted pink and the hair was white calf tail. It was the go to thing in the spring for crappies. The last few years all I saw on the shelves was feathers. The hair jig was popular for years after but apparently they fell victim to feathers. I purchased some calf hair jigs from a dealer in northern MN. and are pretty popular. Last spring I did catch crappies with them and even smb and white bass with them. I am not sure whether I can name the source of the hair jigs on this site.

Hair jigs can be terrific…especially in spring for post spawn monster Walleye. Many guys fish too heavy…and too fast.
I learned a valuable lesson fishing with James Holst…we fished a current break with 1/16 oz hair jigs and 6# momo line…in a short time we hooked seversl big Walleyes including two over 10lbs (by James)
You feel for a slight “tick” as the Walleye sucks in the jig…a quality, sensitive rod makes a BIG difference when fishing hair!

Drew, here at IDO you are welcome to refer to any tackle you may have had success with…as long as it is not an obvious attempt at “free” advertising.

The hair jigs I was speaking of a called The Jig and can be purchased at CKO. I have used them and can say they do catch fish. I have not spent hundreds of hours so the jury is still out. I will be using some in the next few days on the ice. Let us know how you did with them and I will do the same

LOL, guys. A “hair rig” is much different than a “hair jig”. It’s a rig for carp. I’ve never used one, but they intrigue me.

Oh good, I was worried that I might catch a carp or sucker on my crappie jigs

This is a hair rig. The red ball is a boilie, which is a carp bait. Some people also thread corn instead of boilies.

Hair rigs can be deadly. If you watch how carp feed, you’ll understand why. They suck it in like a shop-vac, and if they don’t like what they taste, they blow it out. With a hair rig, the hook is totally exposed, so that the point will still dig in, even if the carp spits out the bait.

I used them for a while last year while targeting carp. It was pretty amazing how my hookup percentage increased.

yes, I saw that video on you tube with hair rigs and it changed how I I thought about my setup. So it seems that they do work better. I will give it a try this year.

I meant to give it a try, but never got around to it. Definitely on my list for this year, though. I will need to hook up with a veteran carp angler like Channelcatben, though!

Veteran? Ha! I’m as much a student as the next guy.

But we should hook up this spring. I will be putting in some hours for the bigguns. I know a couple spots with potential for some real submarines.

You got it! We can chase some kitties or sturgeon in my boat once the time rolls around, too

I’ve been using hair-rigs for a few years now. I mainly use corn, but have started to play around with boilies. They can be tricky to rig sometimes but they are very effective, especially under a small float.

I’ve got friends that live on a lake down south here that is loaded with 10-20lbers and a few that will make you have nightmares. They had a dead one float up last year that measured 42″!!!!!

Ryan- Are you going up for the sturgeon excursion?? If so we should have a talk up there

Ben- I think we met down on pool 1 just above the lock one night last year??? I was in my boat with the girlfriend and you were sitting on shore, I think that was you?

Yeah, that was me. As I recall, I got the skunk that night.

I made up a batch of boilies last year, and never really gave them a fair shot. I plan on doing up a couple batches while the ice melts this year, and trying them out a bit more. But the cool thing about hair rigs is that they’ll hold darn near any type of bait, and still keep the hook gap open. I’m thinking about getting some frozen berries to thread on, after seeing the carp last year feeding heavily on mulberries.

Really!?? That explains why a certain “additive” I put in some of my corn works so well……………….

I thought that was you. I’ll let you know when this lake opens up, obviously not soon, but it is one of the first every year

I don’t get out of the house much, so when I do, you had better watch out! And if I were a Johnny, I would buy everyone a beer just so they wouldn’t tell anyone about it

I think we are taking off and be there Wed. night. Fishing Thursday through Sunday.

Tony, are you the guide for the whole family again this year

Yes I am Only this year Mom and Dad get to fish by themselves, I can’t handle another a** whooping again We have 5 other people that have not been on this trip before, so I will be fishing with them instead of Mom and Dad. I am going to draw a map for them so they will be able to find the fish w/o me, now where that map will take them is to be announced The unfortunate thing is one of the other boats is my sister and her boyfriend and my sister ALWAYS outfishes me. So yea I will be the guide again……………….Maybe this year I will just start drinking when I get up, that way I won’t remember getting my kicked again.

We are headed up weds. morning EARLY and fishing thru sunday. If we aren’t in the bar when you get there we are in cabin 10, I’ll have plenty of cold ones in the fridge

Maybe I’ll just start drinking now………..

Man, you are pretty hard on yourself. We have all had those trips where you can’t buy a bite, doesn’t matter what you do, for some reason the stars are not aligned. This year might be your year

But I will buy you a beer either way

Dad aways said…the guy running the motor never catches fish…I would start drinking in the morning just to be prepared.

Now how did a hair rig post turn in the a sturgeon whining post?

Well, originally, those walleye guys tried to turn it into a hair jig post, so I’d say we’re doing pretty good
