Would there have been coins, a big waterfall and large sign that said IDS in the middle of that pond?
Nice one TC!

Koi pond owner must have dumped it.
That explains the JH branded on the other side of it’s body.

Rough fish can be released. Goldfish are not on the list of fish not allowed to be released back into the same water as caught.
VERY COOL CATCH! And still the gold color and not washed out. Thanks for putting her back!
September 24, 2013 at 7:05 pm #1196591Ha! Brings back memories of when I was a kid. We used to bike down to Como Lake in St Paul and catch huge goldfish. I wonder if they are still in there….

Its not a koi, its a common goldfish.
Goldfish are native to the midwest, but not that specific coloration. You aren’t hurting a thing by releasing it. They are not invasive.

??? Are you sure?

So Iowa and/or WI considers them native?
From what I’ve read they originated in China….
They are classified as invasive in WI also, don’t know about IANovember 1, 2013 at 4:34 pm #1203406I’m not hating on Horseshoe Chain Kev, but I was confused by his statement.
November 3, 2013 at 3:10 pm #1203590Dang it, I KNOW I saw a post on the Iowa DNR’s facebook page about it. They posted a picture of a fish that looked like a carp with no barbels as one of those “guess the fish” questions. It turned out to be a gold fish that they said was native to waters in Iowa. But now I can’t find anything on the DNR site other than aquarium gold fish.
Maybe I’m not looking with the right keywords.
Sorry guys
November 3, 2013 at 3:15 pm #1203591Anyways.. from their site on the aquarium goldfish “They do not appear to jeopardize the integrity of native fishes and seldom spread far.”
They are listed as exotic but not invasive in Iowa. Not legal to release into the water, but not sure if that is for dumping your aquarium fish or releasing one that was caught. I’ve caught several, some a lot bigger than the 16 state record it says on the Iowa DNR website… wish I would have known that 15 years ago.
I even caught a 30″ koi a few years ago fishing for smallmouth in a small creek on a 3″ white grub. Didn’t realize it, but I probably could have sold that fish for $200-300 easily. I killed it It was bright yellow/white. Perfect coloration.
November 3, 2013 at 10:10 pm #1203636If I was to guess, I’d say that you may have seen a post about a goldeye? Although they don’t exactly look like carp or goldfish.
I am not sure if this is true, but I could see 2 separate classifications of non-native fish being exotic and invasive. Maybe goldfish are classified as exotic because they don’t make an impact or a substantial impact on the ecosystem?
I know a lot of lakes where there are goldfish, but they never seem to be abundant. The only lake I know where they were abundant was a small pond by where I grew up that was shallow and had no gamefish in it.
November 3, 2013 at 11:50 pm #1203643Thinking back on it, they may have said WILD GOLDFISH, instead of native. It was a gold colored common goldfish in question, they were trying to “trick” guys that thought they were carp. Lots of people said carp and didnt believe goldfish were in the wild.
Anyhow, I guess I was wrong.. sorry guys.
November 4, 2013 at 3:45 am #1203675Meh, it happens. I was just confused by your original statement.
May 19, 2014 at 10:28 am #1411118Took me a while to dig these photos up, but I got this one several years ago.
June 6, 2014 at 9:37 am #1414645I was waiting for that pic Ryan. That had to be a hard shot with a bow!
June 8, 2014 at 6:00 pm #1414883That shot was very little skill and a whole lot of luck! I was so amazed to hit it.
