Not the greatest pic, but it was dark out.

Caught this one just below a small dam with about a 4′ drop in about 4′ of water. I was dangling my cat gear over a railing and bobbing a crawler up and down. BAM. Hit hard. Probably went about 2#… not huge, but not insignificant.

I wish I’d gotten a pic of the one I landed the other day. Granted it was only about 6″ long, but it was silver (as per normal) on the flanks and it faded to a deep, dark violet color on top. The predominant color scheme was silver/purple. Amazing little fish.

Caught my first longnose gar ever last Friday evening on the Croix at Hudson. Took a pic of it on the ground first and was getting ready to pick it up for a pic holding it when it started flipping around, getting all covered in sand. Tried to rinse it off and it got away from me

    Nice one Manny!

I made up 3 “rope” lures last winter. I haven’t tried them yet but they look like they’ll work.

Used a 2/0 swivel and a Zip Tie to hold the nylon rope to the swivel, then frayed out the rope.

They are a wiggling, fighting fish for their size…and their teeth will draw blood.

Yeah, his post kinda sounded like he was targeting them.

Which is something I actually want to do sometime… because it sounds like fun!

Sorry, guys…wasn’t targetting gar. The fish made a grab for my live sucker minnow and got its teeth caught in the line.

Went out to catch a gar, and did, I caught 2 then stopped, after trying to rinse it off it lashed back and cut my hand a few times, pulled out a tooth when I got home later. SUPER HAPPY, and much respect to the shortnose gar!

Nicole, how where you targeting them? What lure?

I’ve heard their bites don’t like to stop bleeding very fast.

I was targeting them by the trusty method of knowing where they’ve been hanging out and asking if my friend would take me. He told me to bring a bike. 2 mile bike ride and 1 mile through thick brush.

I used a reg hook and a crawler.

And in that photo blood is coming down the other side. I asked before i left that day, someone named Jeremy Liebig, how to hold one. He said “it’s a fish Nicole just a fish!”

    That’s no carp JEREMY!!!!

I swear gar and dogfish are the only fish that look at you and wait for a moment of weakness to strike.

Pulling teeth out of your flesh sounds like a real blast!

I think it is cool that you handled that gar on your own like you did, you rock

There is nothing funnier than watching a grown man dancing in a boat or on the bank afraid to grab a gar or a bowfin
Jeremy is correct, it is just a fish!

the first one was the one that was in my thumb for almost 2 days – the coin is a dime (now i feel like a dork, its so small )
the one Im holding was the one I pulled out when I got home that day.

I would wear a pair of garings with a matching “gar-lace”

I bet that would go nicely with those boots

The one tooth looks like it has barbs on it. I’m sure they are razor sharp too.
    Neat treasure you have there!!!

This Red Horse hit my gill set up off the top of a wing dam. When I first set the hook he thought he was a Tarpon
I believe this is the biggest sucker I have boated. The dude had scales the size of a watch crystal

A lot of fun with the UL tackle!

Here is Milemark_714’s gar. Net with handle is 40″ and it was about 8 inches longer than that. So, rough guess of 48″. Smacked a pink/white blade bait pitching to structure in the current on Pool 6
