When fishing the river or lake and you catch a rough fish ( carp, drum or gar) do you kill it or just release it unharmed ?

    And

If you do harm it fatality. …how do you do it ?

I just release it back. The law that required you to kill rough fish went away in the early 80’s.

release. Don’t think it would make any difference in the population either way. Maybe if everyone killed them but the lakes would be a mess.

Would never kill them. Rough fish have saved more than one fishing trip for me. Many of them are a lot of fun to catch. Catching 3 to 5# red horse that fight like a mule one after another in the fall can be a blast.

Just remember, if you think you need to kill it, you also have to take it home with you and you have to “utilize” it in some way. Either as a meal or fertilizer.

When I was little my father would slit the belly on dogfish and let them go. Never felt right about it.

Still think its funny how many people still think its illegal to throw them back, run into them at the river all the time.

I always enjoy catching a rough fish now and then, and I always release them unharmed. Unless I’m catching them with stick and string then there fertilizer or there goin on the smoker.

I don’t know when I learned about it, but it was relatively recently, like 5-8 years. But it didn’t affect me because I still through them back when it was against the law. I used to fish Rice Creek as a kid in the spring and the stench from the rotting corpses around you was disgusting.

Never was illegal in NY. The only ones I kill are white perch which are killing off the yellow perch population in one of our local lakes. Caught some hugh sheepheads and carp before when using a worm – spinner combo. I hear this Asian carp is trouble if it ever makes it way further north.
