Seeing the comments that Brian receive with his post I thought I would also toss one out. I need to replace my roof and am looking for contractor to do the work that has his own employees working for him. I live in Farmington.

I wouldn’t count out guys who use subs. Seems like quite a few trades are going this route. Makes it more lucrative for everyone, which keeps prices nice for customers.

Key is the relationship the contractor has with his/her subs. High turnover with employees isnt good either. Remember MOST subs we’re the good ones in a company who decided to go off on their own. My 2 cents.

I only mentioned it man bc it’s been really busy last couple years construction, with a worker shortage made anyone who was good leave and start their own. Hard to retain workers in this field nowadays, only so much you can pay until the WC starts hitting hard then makes sense to sub if the work allows it to.

Out of curiosity, dose any know around what is being charged per square today? I know there are many variables. I have a 4/12 pitch on a single level ranch style home. Looking for a tear off and replace.

    I agree.

Also, subcontracting is “lucrative” because in many cases it’s used to avoid tax and insurance costs (whether lawfully or unlawfully). It shifts risk from your “contractor” to the guy(s) actually doing the work. There’s also a huge amount of employee misclassification in construction these days — basically, employers treating employees as subcontractors and/or subcontractors taking cash to avoid taxes. Unfortunately, people looking for the lowest price don’t always care if there are taxes and work comp premiums paid for the workers on their job.
