so I’m in the market for a new rod box. I’m leaning towards the otter sportsmans case but I recently saw a case from striker called the transporter. Has anyone out there used one of these? Any pros or cons? Thanks!

sportsmans case is nice. bought mine last year and I can fit up to 6 rods in it. it keeps my rods safe and its nice for transport – no more shoving rods in a bucket and getting all tangled and damaged. if I remember right, the sportsmans might be a little more spendy than some of the others, and although I cant comment on the performance of other cases, I can say I am satisfied with my purchase.

This will be my 3rd season on the Striker Transporter Case. At first, I absolutely loved the case. Had everything I thought I could ever want in a case. Tons of storage for tackle bags, terminal tackle, etc and ample rod storage with rod tubes.
Unfortunately it hasn’t held up to what I would consider adequate durability. I have seams on the side pockets that have completely come apart and the fabric inside the rod storage area continues inside the tubes which ended up catching my delicate noodle rod and snapping the tip off. There is no reason for fabric in there at all. I emailed the company and received the typical company response “no one else is having problems”. Well, I have yet to see anyone beside myself use one on the ice and the others who talk about it get them from the company so I guess they probably wouldn’t bite the hand that feeds them.
I will still use it until I find something different. For the money I could have certainly gone with the otter case, but its bulk and lack of tackle storage made me keep looking.
I couldn’t with good conscience recommend the transporter to anyone at this point. At first I was telling everyone about it, but not now unless they make some changes.

I bought the frabill heavy duty rod case. I like it a lot and think it is going to be a great case. Two things I liked are the foldable handle and all the snap locks around the case. Has 2 layers of foam on the bottom and can be modified to your liking. Also don’t have to break rod handles down.

I just ordered two new custom Ice rods from TUCR and in my research I’m leaning towards the Otter to protect them. The structural design of the box makes it super tough. Its not just a plastic case

I would check into your local music store and see if they are selling any used instrument cases. A couple of years ago I drove by a house that was throwing out an old trombone case and immediately I thought what a great rod holder. I can fit 6 rod and reel combos in there or a couple of rod and reel combos, tip-ups and lures packs. With the hard shell I don’t have to worry about anything heavy being set on it when packing up the vehicle.

Thanks for the input/different options guys! I think it’s going to be the otter case for me. It’s really too bad that the striker case is not a better made product because it would be a lot more versatile but I need some thing that can take a beating.
