Well, I’m one of those guys who is perpetually hoping for ice-out, so needless to say, this isn’t one of my favorite times of year. Haven’t seen or talked to my Rock buddies in weeks, but seems like years; Running out of eaters, and having to tell the kids to eat tube-steaks when I try to secretly fry up a small batch for myself, and get busted; keep re-assuring the boat that I haven’t forgotten about her, and give her an occasional tender pat in the stern to prove it; desparately trying to keep my last, unused batch of juicy, but weakening, fatheads alive for the day that never seems to come; and on and on and on….I miss you guys!
So is it spring yet??? Oh boy, winter’s just begun..
May have to resort to a day on the ice to get my fix, if some near-by water doesnt open up soon….or drive to Red Wing to share in the bonanza those lucky guys have….what am I gonna do??!!

Fatheads still alive and I will be on the ice down here on the Fox Chain this weekend. I can’t wait to get back the the Mighty Mississippi in a boat. But I will settle for some of the taverns along the Rock in a couple of weeks and scout out some ice fishing up there on the lake.

I think I can see a small ice shack way off in the distance right below the sun.

    Founds some open water!!

Heading to the Lake Michigan shore to fish for some trout.

Gotta wet a line sometime this winter without falling through ice.

a good source has it that the Rock is open at Newville….very tempting if I can get the work schedule to cooperate. Don’t let the hawgs pull you in Diesel.
    good luck.

Wow what a difference a couple of days make. Drove to Iowa for new years with the inlaws. Crossed the hwy 88 bridge over the rock near rock fall on Saturday and the river was pretty well iced up with a couple small channels open. When driving back on Monday it was wide open with some shore ice.

What does it look like around fort now?

Any shore fishing spots open yet with the rain?

The river is pretty much open from just below where the Bark dumps in down to just below the Roberts street bridge. The Kmart launch is a no go but the rivers still froze up from there down past the Bark anyways.
The Municipal launch is open save for the huge iceberg that’s shore to shore right at the launch. I don’t think that will be around by the wknd. I went downstream and the rivers still iced over all the way to Kosh. Not a chance a guys going to get a boat in at the bypass launch at this point and I highly doubt the river will be open enough down there by the wknd anyways. Even if it did open up down there there will be a lot of ice bergs comming down the pike and you would probably spend more time dodging ice chunks or worse instead of fishing.
The rivers still iced over at the VFW too in case you were thinking of fishing from shore there.
Shore fishing in town is an option. Though there is ice here and there there appears to be plenty of places you could cast from shore if you wanted.

    Hope this helps.
