I will be trailering soon on some dirt/gravel roads. Anyone have any experience/thoughts about whether mud flaps on the truck or a trailer rock guard on the trailer is more effective than the other? Skeeter WX2100…Ford F150

Also open to any other ideas.

I have Rock Tamers. While they aren’t perfect, they do know down about 95% of the stones your truck kicks up, assuming you aren’t flying down the gravel. My dad has a Tow-Tector and results are similar.

I think the only 100% deal are the rock guards that mount around the front V of your boat or even just a front bra on your boat/trailer.

I think a front bra on the trailer is definitely going to offer the best protection hands down but they come at a price,$600+ easily. I was just having this dilemma myself and couldn’t spend an arm and a leg. Even the dang Towtector is 300 bones. I decided to DIY them and it cost about 80 bucks total for something that works exceptionally well. I need to take them off and cut off a little of the top, they sag a touch, but it actually does a good job when you’re slinging a little mud, I just haven’t had time.

I’m running Rock Tamers from Cabelas:

    http://www.cabelas.com/product/Enkay-Rock-Tamers/1334831.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DRock%2BTamers%26x%3D10%26y%3D6%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=Rock+Tamers

Done a good job, but I have not run a lot of dirt roads. I’m sure they are stopping those rocks that get stuck in the tread and come loose at 70 MPH. Easy on/easy off. Built to last. Look decent too.

Side note – I have a buddy who trailers into remote Canada once every couple years. He made a makeshift boat “bra” out of one of those floor mats that is carpet on one side and rubber on the other. He just cut to size and bungie cord it on. Aint pretty but cheap and works well for those trips.

Both my Towtecters came off Craigslist. One at half price and the other at less than half. I leave it on my seasonal dually all year but the one on the Silverado gets pulled when the snow flies. They do NOT like snow and slush.–jerr

You can now get an aluminum Tow Tector for the winter salt issue.
