I loaded up the boat and headed to Red Wing this morning and partook in a modicum of relief whilst angling for waldos and hog saug…none of which seemed too willing to cooperate. I did boat eight fish with only one of legal stature. I saw Jim Holst and his compadre Dustin and they both said the same thing…fishing has been tough. By 11:30 I had had enough of it and headed in. On the way to the ramp I saw perhaps fifty or sixty other boats on the water. It was really hard to tell what was working for people. I saw everything being used and the same old everywhere…a fish here and then a fish there. By the time I had pulled it I don’t think I saw more than ten other fish caught, but I’m sure there were. I tried ringies, doo’s, Gulp minnow grubs and , of course, my old faithful power bait minnows and jigging worms. The two latter products were the producers for me. I did try a MadTom (red shad) on a dead stick and had my line broke. The fish really hit those baits with fever. I would have re-tied but had only the one to start with. The fish are there, but seemed to be scattered and on the move. I could not get back to back hits over the same water…I had to be moving. Most of the fish were walleyes. All in all, it was a nice day to be on the water. Lots of eagles in that area right now too.
