Lake Zumbro

I drove out to Lake Zumbro today to check out what the open water/ice was doing. On the Fisherman Inns side of the point at that area people were on the ice [in the bay] ice fishing. On the other side it was open water. The open water area ran past Fishermans Inn on the other side before coming to a halt. My findings at Sandy Point was open water, and no water. From the boat landing out about 40-50 feet was all exposed mud and no water. My heart sunk. Here I had planned using my jon boat this spring to put in there and get a jump on some open water fishing on the lake part that was open. After all its spring which means high water, right? Well….not this year I’m afraid. I have a funny feeling that water has been let through the dam so the engineers can get a good look at just how shallow that area is and just where it needs to be fixed [dug deeper]. I’m hoping that that is the case so then they have seen what they need to see so when spring rains come there will be more water at that ramp. But in reality by that time happens other ramps will probably be open. Its getting closer to open water fishing close to home guys so its time to get out the open water stuff, dust it off, stop out to HOF and replace what needs replacing and even add some new lures to the box of ”fish catching weapons” that we will need for the new season which will be soon upon us.
    COME ON SPRING!!!
    Thanks, Bill

Hey Bill, Don’t they drop the lake level real low every winter until after ice out? Once they have a gauge on the seasonal ice melt I think they bring the lake levels back up to normal summer depth. In may be a few weeks yet, but the levels should be back at Sandy Point before too long. No longer a real good landing spot, but we’ve known that for a while now.

They drop it every fall. With the early snow melt we have had this year there just isn’t anymore snow to melt to raise the level up. Our forcast is for some warm temps for awhile so it might end up being rain instead of more snow to raise the water level up. I’m sure you have heard tho old saying: when it rains it pours. My question is: then wheres the rain?
Have a GREAT day guys. Thanks, Bill
